Corrections News New purchasing director hired BY COLIN MCFADDEN-ROAN Staff Writer Tracy A. Hall will begin as Di rector of Purchasing on December 15. Hall comes to Guilford from Polo/ Ralph Lauren, where she has worked since 1989. Hall fills a position which has been troubled since Dawn Atkins left it last year. Atkins returned to Guil ford this fall, filling in part time since her successor, Steve Crompton, left over the summer. Hall will be in charge of all pur chases made by Guilford on behalf of academic departments, student organizations, and other sectors of the College, including facilities. These areas of the school depend on the purchasing department to earn them the best deals on everything from sports equipment to electronic sys tems vendors. At Polo/Ralph Lauren, she dem onstrated an ability to earn the best deals. Recently, she received her company's Presidential Distinguished Service Award for developing systems that saved over SIOO,OOO in one year. Security CONTINUED FROM PG 1 expressing her belief that she can learn from the students and they from her. So great was her desire to-be aware of the happenings on campus that, before she arrived here, she read The Guilfordian on-line on a weekly basis. When asked about her ideas about security policy, Chillcott had a very positive response. "We are not out to get someone. If you come to our attention by breaking a rule or regulation, we are obligated to follow up on it." That does not mean, however, instant guilt. Chillcott is adamant in explain ing that she is always willing to talk to anyone who is in violation of cam pus procedures, and explain to them exactly what infractions have been made. Chillcott says that if the stu dent understands not only that a rule has been broken, but why that rule is important to the college commu nity, then the likelihood of that rule being broken again is lessened. Chillcott's goal is not to do away with regulations, but to help students understand them better so that they The Guilfordian December 12,1997 "Everyone has been affected in some way by the absense of a quality full-time purchasing director," said Community Senate business manager Olivia Riordan. "Having Tracy come in now will make things run a lot more smoothly on the purchasing end of things." Hall was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Franklin Pierce College, where she earned her Purchasing Management Certification. According to Human Resources Director Robyn Parsons, Hall demon strated exceptional strength in project management and contract negotiation in her previous job. With Polo/Ralph Lauren, Hall directed pur chasing for 67 retail locations in the Greensboro area. A High Point resident, Hall implemented and maintained the stock inventory program for Polo/ Ralph Lauren in our region. While in college, she headed emergency secu rity dispatch program at Franklin Pierce, scheduling and training 25 students as well as working with po lice, fire, and emergency medical per sonnel. So in this time of change on campus, there is, in Sylvia Chillcott, a new outlet for students. A person who is willing to talk, and listen. A person who is dedicated to provid ing safety to all students in all situa tion. A person who, most impor tantly, is willing to learn. Amy Rouse
