16 Quakers sweep ODAC doubleheader BY DAN GATTI Sports Editor On Sunday, March 22, Eastern Mennonite and Guilford were in simi lar positions. Eastern Mennonite, at 8- 3, had played only two games inside the ODAC. Guilford's overall record wasn't as good, at 9-9, but like Eastern Mennonite, they had played few games inside the ODAC and were only 2-1 in the conference. The Sunday ODAC doubleheader would go a long way in determining the conference fate of both teams. The first game featured two un defeated starting pitchers —Tim Good (3-0) for Eastern Mennonite and the surprising K.C. Chambers, who led all Guilford pitchers with a 5-0 record. It looked like a good pitching duel was brewing. It wasn't. Chambers spotted Eastern Men nonite a run in the second. A leadoff double by star hitter and cleanup hitter Mike Gale, followed by a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly gave Menonite the lead, NL-style. But Guilford came storming back in the third. Kevin Moore hit his fifth homerun of the year off Good, a two run shot, and it clearly rattled him, as he then allowed an RBI double two bat ters later to Brian Chambers. The Quakers then loaded the bases in the fourth, and once again it was Moore coming through with a two out single to put the Quakers on top, 4- 1. It wouldn't stop there. The Quakers added two more in the fifth when Good hurt himself with a big two-base error with two runners on that scored a run and set up an RBI single by Chris Butcher. But the Quak ers blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth with a huge eight-run in ning, thanks largely to the control prob lems of Eastern Mennonite pitcher John Miller. Miller walked shortstop Toshimuro Sakamoto, then after a double by Moore, let him score on a wild pitch. Another double scored Moore, then another walk and two singles scored three more and kicked Miller out of the game without retiring a batter. The new Eastern Mennonite pitcher then seemed to get out of the jam, only to give up a three-run homer it wL AGK fir # \ ,A ■-. ,' .Hi/ *' Sm b Hto fii ; i4|& £ fl J® ; ■ : r _ .. : : :^. vtj#,. _ I The Quaker nine have won eight of their past 11 games. Chambers worked the full seven innings and gave up only two runs as the Quakers romped, 14-2. Quaker basketball players honored BY DAN GATTI Sports Editor After a fantastic season which fea tured a 13-game winning streak and nu merous school and ODAC records fall, two Guilford women's basketball players have been honored with awards. Laura Haynes has become the first Guilford player ever to earn a sport on the WBCA Division 111 All-America team. This honor will go well with her previous extensive list of accolades, which include '97-'9B ODAC Player of the Year, first team ODAC all-conference recognition four straight years, 18 school records, and 10 ODAC records. She is the ODAC all-time scoring leader with 2,283 points and all-time rebounder with 1,021 rebounds. In addition, Marija Preimats got a spot on the 1998 GTE College Division Sports cluded RBl's by Reed, Squirt Rochelle, and three off of a home run by (guess who?) Kevin Moore. Guilford quickly and neatly added two more in the third on a two-run home Academic All-America women's basket ball team. She is the first academic Ail- American at Guilford since 1985. The award goes to basketball players with a 3.20 GPA or above. Preimats ended her career second cm the team (to Haynes) with a career-high 16.2 ppg average. She was named academic All-District 111 three times. In addition, Preimats carries a 3.83 TheGuilfordian 5800 W. Again, they were able to jump out to a quick 1-0 lead on a couple singles and a wild pitch, but once again, the Guilford of fense ut terly de stroy e d Mennonite pitching. In the second, Guilford ex ploded for five runs, which in- run by catcher Jason Rodriguez, then exploded for four more in the fourth, when walks loaded the bases twice for Guilford, and Butcher and Sakamoto were each able to turn those into two- RBI hits. By the beginning of the fifth in ning the score was 11-1, and the Quak ers were rolling. Chad Coward (2-3), who has been effective all season for the Quakers, ended up giving up four runs in the last two innings en route to a complete game five-run outing, but by that point, the game was long over. The Quakers had rolled over Eastern Mennonite by a combined score of 25-7, an utter thrashing that has put the Quakers on top of the ODAC in wins with four, and has given them a winning record at 11-10. For his 6-for-12, two-HR perfor mance, Kevin Moore was also awarded ODAC Player of the Week honors. The complete game in game one was KC Chambers' first of his career. Chambers leads Guilford with six wins. The Quakers went on to lose to Salisbury State on Wednesday by the final score of 11-3, but will hope to con tinue riding their current 8-3 hot streak into their upcoming home games against Randolph Macon, Williams and Averett next week. grade point average, and is a seven-time dean's list biology major.
