2 The Norton ticket: raising student voices By Marjorie Hall GUEST WRITER Senior James Norton, candi date for Senate president, is not satisfied with what he's seen of Senate in his four years here. "What I've seen for the last few years is the ad ministration run ning the show," Norton said. "We don't really have a voice on this campus. I don't be lieve that Senate really repre sents the student body." Norton, current president of the senior class, mentor, rugby player, CHAOS leader, and Sen ate member for four years feels that the student voice at Guilford is often ignored. "I would like to try to make a stronger stand for the stu- "We don't really have a voice on this campus. I don't believe that Senate really represents the student body." —James Norton change." Neil Taveras, candidate for vice-president, agreed, "That is our primary cause." Taveras, ath lete, CHAOS leader, and Bryan representative to Senate, feels that he is well-suited for the job of vice-president. "I feel very connected with the campus," he News said. "I enjoy working with people, I am a hard working indi vidual, and I am easy to get to know, and I think those are key quali ties." dents. This school claims to be student oriented, but they aren't, and I would like to see that The members of the ticket feel that they come from different parts of the campus and can do a good job of represent ing the student body. "We're all friends, so we can work together, but we generally hang out with dif ferent crowds," said Skye Harrris, sophomore sociology major and candidate for sceretary. Harris, who was secretary for her high school's student govern ment, has not been involved in Sen ate in her past two years but was motivated to get involved in part by the current hate crimes policy being discussed in Senate. She is currently working with the Gayzette, the newsletter of GLBTA, and wants to get Senate involved with issues within the gay community at Guilford. "Dealing with the gay com munity is one of my top priori ties," Harris said. "Someone needs to be in there working with these issues." Norton is aware that many of the people on his ticket have less experience with Senate than members of the other tickets, but feels that this is one of their strengths. "The reason I chose the people on my ticket was that I wanted a fresh face in there who might not have all the experience they need, but they have a whole month at the end of April to fig ure out how to do the position. I feel that these people are more than qualified to fit their roles. I I- : - - AR!L*ILIIP ';■ -;""//- y£:'"- y - .. . COURTESY COMMUNITY SENATE Norton Corrections An article in the February sth issue erroneously said that a 7-meal-a-week plan was going to be offered to students next year. THE GUILFORDIAN FEBRUARY 19, 1 999 wanted people that had a distinct diverse voice." Norton emphasizes though, that through his four years he has learned a great deal about the in ner workings of Senate. Norton, who will be attending Guilford for a fifth year because of his decision to switch his major from political science to business, currrently lives off-campus, but is willing to live on-campus next year if it is necessary for the job. "I un derstand that representing the stu dents it might be necessary that I'll be willing to do that." He feels that living off-campus has not brought him out of touch with students, but instead has given his a chance to step back and gain greater insight on Guilford. The Norton ticket has made a decision not to campaign. "We want to talk about the issues, not come up with a cheesy slogan," said Norton. "We are here to rep resent people, not to gloat about ourselves and make long lists of our credentials." Norton feels that his ticket is distinct from the other tickets. "The other tickets represent ad ministration. They are a bunch of great people, but we are the ones who are here for the stu dents." Sophomore political science major Luke Boganny, who was not available for the interview, is running for Treasurer on the Norton ticket.
