These are just a few of the newspapers around the U.S. that have printed articles about Guilford Calling all student leaders Devender Sellars and Natalie Hodge STAFF WRITERS "Our community, our nation, and our world is hungry for a new type of leadership, an inclusive yet challenging way of reaching in wardly to better understand what is happening holistically," said Santes Beatty, director of African American Affairs. Beatty and Dawn Watkins, associate dean of student life, of fer "Leadership From Theory to Practice," an independent study course this fall semester 2001. "This is a project-based intern ship that incorporates leadership theory with application for student leaders at Guilford College," states the syllabus. "The experience is designed to introduce students to funda mental theories of leadership and assist them in exploring and devel oping their personal leadership styles." On the idea for the class, Watkins said, "One of the things that happens ... is that leaders tend to work in silence. This class will not only look at leaders and the theories behind leadership but will allow student leaders to work to gether who typically hadn't be fore."., y Beatty further said, "The class geology professor Dave Dobson and his addictive computer game Snood. In only the past few months Dobson has been talking with many other newspapers and the popularity of Snood has only ex panded. In January, the Greensboro News & Record printed an ar ticle and sent it to the Associ ated Press, as most papers do. Then the Philadelphia Inquirer distributed their own article saying that Snood has really caught on. Since it was printed, there have been articles coming out all over the country con cerning the Snood craze. "It was a big surprise to me," said Dobson. " The Phila delphia Inquirer put it out on the AP, some [newspapers] printed the Inquirer's article, while others did more of a lo cal article concerning Snood." "The leadership class will cer tainly put a new spin on how stu dents view leadership at Guilford," said Natalie Hodge, student leader in the Office of African American Affairs. "I hope people will take full advantage of this op portunity to challenge traditional ideas about what it means to be a leader." The Guilfordian News written, the downloads, as well as registrations of Snood, have increased. Dobson said despite Snood's popularity, there has not been an increase in the number of people registering the game. He said out of about one mil lion people who have downloaded his game, less than one percent actu- ally register for it. However, there is at least one Guilford College student who has registered Snood. Jun ior Alex Hutton explained why: "Because I was just sick of see ing those messages." The messages of which she speaks include such poems as "Roses are red, Violets are blue, Register now and to Snood be true," which appear many times if the game is not registered. Given Snood's power, it seems that there are those who need to back off from it. Some have discovered that the neverending battle with Dave Dobson's creatures can be ad dictive, resulting in a need to kick the habit.
