Page 2 Binford residents reflect on gruesome year Josh West STAFF WRITF.R Glass shards and body flu ids have tainted the halls of Binford almost daily for the past 10 months. Some residents in the hall have constantly deterio rated the standard of living for all who inhabit it, residents said. Every weekend, new sur prises are found in the bath rooms. "There was a toilet-paper dispenser with [crapl on it in the toilet," said Josh Laker, like all residents of Binford a first-year student. "Some dumb [person! pissed all over the sinks in the boy's bathroom, causing our R.A. to clean it up," said Garra Woodham and Eathan Gleiner, who reported having discovered "worms in the bathroom and on the water fountain." In the girl's bathroom. "There was a used tampon in the shower for over a month," Meaghan McCamman said. Hannah Klein said. "For two weeks, I had to take a shower in water four inches deep with other people's hair, spit, dirt and grime floating around in it." Sometimes substances nor mally found only in bathrooms made their way out into the halls. Julia Bayardi was con cerned when "Someone def ecated in the hallway," and Lisa Meager commented that she "nearly gets a disease when [shel walks down the hall." Besides the common infes tation of germs, insects also in fest some dorm rooms. The Guilfordian News Jacob Blom STAFF WRITER Whitlow Elected Faculty Clerk Carolyn Beard Whitlow has been elected to a two-year term as Faculty Clerk. Whitlow has been professor of English and African American Studies since 1993. During that period, she directed the African American Studies program be tween 1995 and 1998. She is also concluding a three-year term as the chair of the English department. Whitlow was given the Ed Lowe Teaching Excellence Award in 2001 as well as the Board of Visitors Excellence in Teaching Award in 1998. Succeeding Jonathan Malino, Whitlow said, "I have an awesome responsibility. My goal is to hear clearly the faculty's concerns and to help guide us to consensus in our decision making." African American Awards J Ceremony The African American Awards Ceremony was held on Sunday, April 21, 2002, at 7 p.m. in Bryan, Jr. auditorium. Sponsored by the office of African American affairs, the Af rican American Cultural Society, and African American Studies, the ceremony honors students and faculty alike for academic, athletic, leadership or commu nity service. This annual cer emony commemorates the many accomplishments in the African American community. Biyant Games, AACS Trea surer, won an Academic Excel lence Award. "It felt good to be recognized in front of my peers and Guilford faculty and stu dents," Games said about win ning the award. "[The ceremony] created a sense of community and a very uplifting atmosphere." Other winners of awards were: Tammy Brimmer, Benita Faison, Natasha Gains, Cheri 'The ladybug invasion of the fall was pleasant compared to the silverfish - those big, hairy centipedes with stingers - I found on my floor and around my bed," Paul Yost said. Most residents agree that one cure for the problem is to never have another first-year dorm. Dick Dyer Memorial Awards Dick Dyer, assistant to the dean of student life, died in Au gust, 1997. He worked at Guilford College for 18 years. The awards honor his service to Guilford College students and dedication to Guilford College. The fifth annual awards cer emony was held on Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at 6 p.m. in the Walnut room. The awards were given to people and clubs who showed that same dedication to Guilford College. The awards were stu dent-nominated and voted on by students. The awards were pre sented by Elizabeth Appenzeller, Tamara Asad, Mona Olds, Rebecca Saunders, and Vance Ricks. "It is good to acknowledge these people and their work," Senate Vice-President Asad said. "I think everybody that got an award deserved it." Winners of awards were: Brent Chermside, the Yachting Club, Kwame Darko, Jill Burchell, Shaneena Robertson, the African American Culture Society, the International Club, Carolyn Beard Whitlow, Ernest McCoy, Santes Beatty, Anne Glenn, Don McNemar, Joanne Toby, and Mona Olds.
