PAGE 6 WWW.GUILFORDIAN.COM Summer's coming and you don't have a pi Stephanie Atlan Staff Writer So you're sitting on the living room couch, watching your third straight hour of The Real World, and your parents ask you for the fourth time to please empty the dishwasher. As you shoot them the look of death, you won der when the hell it's going to hurry up and get dark so you can go out, sit in some park and drink cheap beer with the few remaining friends you have left from high school. After three and a half months of this, returning to Guilford starts to look pretty good. Does this summer sound famil iar? Don't worry. There are literally hundreds of places and organiza tions looking for slackers just like you. Summer offers a long span of time for students to do whatever their little hearts desire. Interning, volunteering, traveling, and just plain old outdoorsy jobs are all refreshing alternatives to a sum mer at home. Making money and improving a resume are nice incentives, but so is the opportuni ty to meet hot foreign people. Here are just a few ways you can look into having an exciting and (dare I say) productive summer. The Liars: A new, beautifully tumor-inducing album.. Will Groves Staff Writer arp JL hey Were Wrong, So We Drowned" (TWWSWD) is the latest from NYC-based indie band Liars, released on February 24th, 2004. The album starts unassumingly with a clear bell tone ushering in the first track, "Brocken Witch." That tone is the only clear, ring ing bell on this album, filled with grating dissonance and jangling distorted guitars behind vocals that seem done in quick take. Just from reading the track titles on TWWSWD, you can tell this band is a little off. Tracks include "There's Always Room on the Broom," "If Your (note: yes, it's supposed to be "your") a Wizard Then Why Do You Wear Glasses?," and closing track "Flow My Tears the Spider Said." Volunteer: Volunteering at home is both challenging and rewarding, but volunteering abroad spices things up a bit. You can use this opportu nity to brush up on your foreign language skills, live and work with people from different countries, and take time to do a little travel ing. International work camps are plentiful and are established all over the world. Most organiza tions require a simple registration diverse, if consistently jarring. A major factor in the album's moodiness is the excellent produc tion by David Andrew Sitek, of fel low NYC band TV on the Radio. Sitek layers parts within one another, creating a cohesive sound from a band whose influ ences include everything from '9os electronica to '7os art-rock to Beck and back again. Sonically, the album may be dis sonant and schizophrenic, but it's always interesting and always keeps me guessing. Lyrically, it's just schizophrenic. TWWSWD is a concept album.
