Once upon a Mm through Metico: Roadtrip Mais and nflwlaiioiis Cory Williams Staff Writer With plans to drive to Mexico for Spring Break, I was looking for an adventure; but there is a fine line between adventure and nightmare. "You're not going," quipped my roommate Morgan Mueller. "It will never happen." She ended up sitting next to me in the car. "That's crazy," my dear mother said. "It's not possi- ble to drive to Mexico. You won't make it." A little over 30 cramped hours later, I was at a hotel in Monterrey, Mexico, proving her wrong. Driving to Mexico was not that difficult. Driving in and around Mexico was an experience to say the least. It did not take us long (us refers to Kyle Brebner, Morgan, Aaron Saunders, and Yellow Bike Co-op Jake Kalos Staff Writer Late for class? See that yellow bike over there? Hop on. It's yours ... for now. This is the work of Guilford's bike co-op. There are currently over ten bikes around campus, with more appearing as soon as they are fixed up, painted and declared safe to ride. The bikes are for anyone and everyone in the commu nity to use. This means that if you see a bike lying around, hop on. When you are finished riding, leave the bike in an accessi ble place so that someone else can pick it up and use it. The idea for the co-op formed when "a couple of students were discussing how outra geously awe some bicycles are," Jonathan JAKE KALOS/GUILFORDIAN A yellow bike, just waiting to be picked up Henderson, founder of the co op, wrote via e-mail. A focus community is the center point of the co-op. On Feb. 12, 15 to 20 students spent the afternoon at Hildebrandt fixing and spray painting the bikes. The group worked hard to HTTP://VWWV.B7THSCALE.INFO give something to the commu nity, while at the same time enjoying themselves. "We listened to smooth oldies on the radio and worked on bikes out in the yard. Everyone brought food to share with the group, and we had some awfully tasty homemade beverages as well," senior Matt McGuire wrote via e-mail. Community Senate donated SI,OOO to the project, which was primarily spent on tools. The co-op will continue to meet on Saturdays to have work sessions, "shop hours" and group bike rides. There is a bike rack outside of Founders, which is the des ignated drop off spot for bro ken bikes. If you are interested in the club you can e-mail either Matt McGuire (mmcguire@guilford.edu) or Jonathan Henderson (agave@riseup.com). 3S FEATURES myself) to learn the two cardinal rules of driving in Mexico: Do not hit anyone and do not get hit by any one. At one intersection, five cars pulled up next to each other, taking up both lanes. When the light changed, the cars spread out covering every possi ble direction. Once we understood the rules of the road, we had to deal with the car itself. While driving down a semi-paved road, we saw a hand-painted sign for the beach pointing down a dirt road. We decided to investigate, hoping to find that elusive, picturesque beach you never see in person but always see on postcards. Saluting graduating seniors Meredith Veto Staff Writer On March 22 at 7:00 p.m., a Senior Salute Dinner will take place in the cafeteria. The "Senior Celebration Committee," is a joint effort organized and coordinated by LSC, the Office of Admission, CCL, and the Alumni Association. The catered-style dinner will include guest speakers, both professors and students. Students will be able to sit with their FYE classes and professors. "The idea is to reflect over what's happened to them over the last four years," said Blaine Lukkar, LSC coordina tor. "Students can come back with the same people they entered the college with." Athank-you note table will be set up so that students can write messages to professors and others at the college, as well as a sign-up table for workshops sponsored by CCL. "We're working on the types of workshops addressing issues that students feel they don't get information about before they leave here," said Emily Schmidt of CCL. "For instance, how to budget, handle your personal finances, set up a living space, and rent an apartment. Also, addressing basic legal issues, things you might have to deal with on the job or in everyday life; what happens if you get in a car accident or if someone takes you to small claims court." Lukkar says that the goal of the dinner is to establish a connection with graduating stu dents. "This is the first step toward what we hope to On the way, the car- a lowered Volkswagen Golf stalled in the middle of a very deep puddle. Instead of basking in the sun on a secluded beach paradise, we were stranded on a dirt road in the mid dle of nowhere. Fortunately for us, nice people still exist. A few local security guards stopped and offered us help and eventually a tow. They towed us to Poncho's house. Poncho is a full-time security guard, amateur carpenter, and in his spare time, he collects ancient Aztec artifacts. "We want to create some traditions for seniors, their rites of passage, and to figure out how we can be helpful to young and old alumni." To keep alumni connected, the committee has the idea to create regional lists of contact information so that alumni can keep in touch and find out what others are doing after col lege. Nancy Riemer from Admissions also says that young alumni find that talking with perspective students is a good way to "contin ue the legacy of Guilford." Several student members of YALP were present at the meeting to plan the dinner, including senior Laura Wigand. "YALP is a group of students that are engaged in this process to learn about what it is to be alumni and to have a deeper connection to Guilford," Wigand said. "The hope is that the group will be a catalyst for activity and help lead events like the Senior Salute Dinner, since it's a small er, more manageable group than the entire senior class." CCE seniors are also encouraged to attend. Contacts: Blaine M.
