Clubs
respond to
budget cuts
MID-YEAR BUDGET
REDUCTIONS PART OF LONG-
UNENFORCED OSLE POLICY
By Elaine Kellogg
Staff Writer
Following the mid-year budget review
for student organizations, several clubs
received budget cuts. This is the first year
Community Senate and the Inter-Club
Council have directed a mid-year review
session, suggesting an interest in following
up on existing regulations from the ICC
and the Office of Student Leadership and
Engagement.
According to the 2010-2011 Student
Organization Manual, clubs that have
spent more than 75 percent or less than
25 percent are contacted following annual
audits conducted by the OSLE. Clubs that
have spent less than 25 percent at mid
year are subject to budget reductions of up
to 50 percent unless they can defend their
lack of spending.
"These policies were in the books before
I got here," said Director of OSLE Erin Fox.
"This is the first year that ICC has tried to
stick so thoroughly to the written policies."
Clubs that spend more than 75 percent
of their overall budget before the mid-year
were made liable for probation. Of the
20 student organizations that underwent
review, 15 organizations had their
budgets cut, 10 organizations were put on
probation and one organization was taken
off probation.
"Probation is an organizational status
put on clubs in the event that there is a
lack of activity, leadership issues, trouble
with allocation of resources or other

Senate election campaigns underway
Senate election candidates sophomore Karen Turner for treasurer and junior Brian Jones

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES
DISCUSS FUTURE GOALS,
STRESS COMMUNITY INPUT
By Meg Holden
Staff Writer
Community Senate elections will be held
on Monday, April 4. This is a chance for all
traditional students to have a say in who
represents the student body.
This year's election is different from recent
elections because there are no tickets. Every
candidate runs alone for the office they want.
"The switch to individual tickets is
exciting," said senior Patchouli Oerther, vice
president of Community Senate and chair of
the election committee. "It helps bring in a
variety of people. It also helps avoid some of
the problems tickets have faced in the past,
like disqualifications, and leaves more room
for dealing with human error."
The candidates this year are junior
Yahya Alazrak, junior Elijah Dacosta and
sophomore Cate Schurz for president; junior
Brian Jones for vice-president; first-year Peter
Terrell and sophomore Karen Turner for

Libyan revolt receives international involvement

Operation Odyssey Dawn has
begun.
The mission is to free the African
country of Libya from their current
ruler, Moammar Gadhafi.
Since Feb. 15, Libya has been a
country of riots, Reuters reported.
Gadhafi has been the sole ruler of Libya
since he was 27 — he is now close to
70, BBC News reports. Citizens in
Libya have been calling for Gadhafi's
resignation for months and Gadhafi s
primary response has been met with
violence.
Libya has now acquired international
support for their revolt. On March
19, France began the first air strikes
in response to Gadhafi's government
forces attacking Benghazi, a city where
rebel forces were residing. That same
day, the U.S. and the U.K. joined the
French through use of submarines and
warships, BBC News reported.
"We are not putting any ground forces
into Libya," President Barack Obama
said in a weekly radio address, as
described by the American Forces Press
Service. "Our military has provided
unique capabilities at the beginning, but
