SPORTS Hall of Fame values players who strive for greatness on and off the field 15 October?, 2011 GUILFORD'S NEWEST HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES COME TO VISIT DURING HOMECOMING WEEKEND. THERE WILL BE MANY EVENTS TO CELEBRATE THE ALUMNI ATHLETES. By Eleanor Coleman Staff Writer A special part of this year's Homecoming will be the Hall of Fame ceremony commending those who were Guilford's outstanding student athletes during their attendance here. The Hall of Famers will be written in Guilford's history books forever. They are part of Guilford's story. David Brown, '98, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame for his excellence in lacrosse. "The numbers I put up and the team put up, the points we scored, me being the tip of the spear I guess, it was inevitable," said Brown when asked if this came as a surprise. "We scored a lot of points." Brown spoke highly of his experience at Guilford. "Here I saw different cultures, different teachers, and different ways of thinking from what I already knew," said Brown. "At -Guilford, I learned to think for myself, to think outside of what I knew." He also made reference to Guilford's sense of family, especially on the field. "I talked to teammates that I haven't talked to in years and it felt like yesterday," said Brown. Brown's experience at Guilford led him down a path that has taken him many places. After sailing the West Coast, he came back to North Carolina where he currently lives as a struggling artist and the assistant coach of a high school lacrosse team. Brown offers advice to Guilford's current athletes. "First and foremost, you're here for an education, so let the athletics be the diversion ... take care of your academics because you can come out here and forget it all," said Brown. In order to give these alumni the acknowledgement they deserve, there will be events throughout Homecoming where the Hall of Famers will be recognized. The honorees will be served a private brunch with their guests on Saturday morning before they attend the public induction ceremony, where each of them will be introduced by a video narrative and then awarded their medallion. The group will also be recognized at half-time during the football game. Dave Walters, assistant director of athletics, was involved with the Hall of Fame selection progress and the organization of these events. He explained what goes into deciding who should be part of the Hall of Fame. "We choose to celebrate individuals who have demonstrated excellence in the athletics realm, whether on the field or in service to the college's athletic department," said Walters. "We want to show people that there are good things going on at Guilford College and that the college is turning out good people doing great things. These individuals are excellent representatives of that." "The Hall of Fame is a vehicle for the college to reconnect with these people who otherwise wouldn't have been connected," said Walters. "That's something that each school values ... to renew connections with accomplished folks." The Hall of Fame events will commemorate athletes from the past and what they achieved during their time at Guilford. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 11:30 a.m. in Dana Auditorium. Our recognition and celebration of their success makes them part of this school's history forever. Each of us has the chance to do something, whether in athletic programs or not, that we can be remembered "I think it's important to have a Hall of Fame at Guilford so that we can be proud of our college and see the achievements of people that have gone here," said sophomore Isaiah Unger. "The alumni deserve respect for their successes, and I think seeing that gives us, as current students, motivation to do something that will make a difference at Guilford." "We choose to celebrate individuals who have demonstrated excel ence in the athletics realm, whether on the fie d or in service to the college athletic department."
