SPORTS MARCH 1, 2013 11 WOMENS BASKETBALL Guflford women’s basketball wins back-to-back ODAC Championships Junior Gabby Oglesby scores her 1,000th point against Emory & Henry. Continued from Page I Although Oglesby was unable to reach 1,000 points during her at Tabor High School, that didn't stop her from one day achieving 1,000 career points. Oglesby's high school coach Rick Anderson stays in contact with Gabby and gives her advice when he watches her play. "I am so proud and thrilled for Gabby and her accomplishments at Guilford," said Anderson in an email interview. "She will forever be the example I give to girls (to prove) that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to." Oglesby isn't just an example of hard work and determination but a humble role model to her teammates. "I look up to Gabby, and I am so proud of her," said first-year guard Lila Scott. "She makes me want to get 1,000 points." Oglesby received encouragement from her support system, especially her parents. "I believe prayer, support from family and friends, a love for the game, and a good coaching staff contributed to the player she is today," said Oglesby's mom Melinda Hart in an email interview. "It was a lifetime event I will forever treasure." The same night Oglesby reached her milestone, women's basketball head coach Stephanie Flamini received a signed ball in recognition of her 200th win during a win against Emory & Henry. "Reaching this ■'milestone of 200 wins means you have longevity, and that's important, especially in this business," said Flamini. "The players are the ones that put the ball in the hoop. I've just been lucky enough to coach a lot of good players." The coaching staff expressed gratitude for working under Flamini during this record-breaking season. "It's a great accomplishment and an honor to be part of this," said Student Assistant Coach Ryan Phillips. "It's great that I could learn under her this year, and hopefully I can continue this next year." Before arriving at Guilford, Flamini was a graduate assistant coach for Deirdre Kane at West Chester University. "Her success does not surprise me," said Kane. "Coach Flamini knows that to last in this profession, you need to care about the student athletes as people, not just players. She seems to have found her niche at Guilford." On Sunday, Feb. 24, the team made history by winning the Old Dominion Athletic, Conference Championship against Eastern Mennonite University for the second year in a row. Towards the end of the game, several starters were in foul trouble when the stakes were high. With seven seconds left in the game, senior guard Brittany Atwater drove down the middle of the lane to put the Quakers ahead 61-59. With solid defense and screaming fans, the Quakers came out victorious. "The feeling can't be put into words," said Atwater. "It is an amazing accomplishment to win this as a senior." The awards didn't stop there. Senior Morgan King, Atwater and Oglesby were selected for the All- ODAC Conference team and All- ODAC Tournament team. Oglesby also received the tournament's Most Valuable Player. 2013 Sprite Slam ‘flunk’ Contest BY JOHN KLEUPFEL Staff Wrttbi Gone are the days when superstars like Air Jordan, Clyde Drexler, Julius Erving and Vince Carter graced the Slam Dunk Contest with their presence. Today's Slam Dunk Contest needs reform. At first glance, the 2013 Sprite Slam Dunk Contest lineup looked very promising and packed with high fliers. But none of the players who competed are in the starting line-up for their organizations. How many of the competitors played in the All- Star game? Zero. Only Kenneth Faried of the Denver Nuggets and Terrence Ross of the Toronto Raptors participated in an All-Star weekend event, playing in the Rising Stars Challenge, formerly known as the Rookie-Sophomore game. Terrence Ross is a rookie who is shooting less than 40 percent from the field. Ross' Player Efficiency Rating is 10.39. To put that in perspective, that is 278th in the NBA. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2013 Sprite Slam Dunk Contest champion! 2012 Sprite Slam Dunk Contest winner Jeremy Evans and 2013 runner-up plays a staggering five minutes a game. Also, there's no denying Gerald Green's dunking ability, for anybody that saw Green's alley-oop windmill slam can vouch for his selection. But superstar? No way. Before fans demanded superstars, can we at least have rotation players? Superstars have been absent from the contests for years with an occasional marquee player competing. In 2000, Vince Carter of the Dallas Mavericks might have had the best dunk contest in history, completing dunks that had never been thought of before. Carter surprised everyone with his reverse 360-windmill dunk. Dwight Howard of the Los Angeles Lakers was hailed as the new "Superman" with his memorable defeat of Nate Robinson in 2008. While Carter and Howard were "superstars" among fan support, the level of competition in recent contests has not been loaded with top players. Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins, Clyde Drexler and Spud Webb all competed in the 1988 contest. Can we rewind time back to 1988 and relive one of the greatest dunk contests ever? Jordan won the contest in 1987 when he created eight different dunks. 2013 winner Terrence Ross only had to generate four. While owners are paying players millions of dollars, do they remain skeptical about letting the players enter, or is it the player's decision? Maybe the fear injury, or simply losing. Superstar Lebron James has almost everything: three MVP awards, multiple All- Star game appearances and an NBA championship but not a NBA Sprite Slam Dunk Contest award. If you want to sweep all NBA awards, compete just once. They'll give you the trophy before you arrive to the arena. So where are you James? Russell Westbrook? Superstars, you owe it to the league. You owe it to us, the loyal fans. Do you know a graduating senior dedicated to community service? You should nominate them for... The Algernon Sydney Snlliyan Award The award will be presented to one graduating senior to acknowledge distinguished service performed in the Triad area. Nominations are completely confidential and the winners will be announced at the Spring Awards Convocation. Nonnination forms are on Guilford Intranet, under Services > Advancement > Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards at Guilford College. Nominations are due to Jill Orr by March 10
