FEATURES MAY 3, 2013 SPRING FLING Spring Fling promotes fun, family, friends, a bit of fundraising Children of CCE students enjoyed activities like rock climbing. Continued from Page I Associate Vice President and Dean for Continuing Education Rita Serotkin said that the purpose of the Spring Fling is to celebrate the end of another year. "It is a time for everyone to relax and enjoy the semester is almost over." "The Spring Fling is our time to enjoy the fruits of our labors," said senior and CCE SGA president Victor Lopez. "We recognize CCE students for their hard work. Plus, who doesn't like food?" The day began with an awards ceremony, which was kicked off in Quaker fashion with a moment of silence. CCE students were recognized for having the highest GPA of graduating seniors. Each department also gave awards to students for other outstanding achievements. Serotkin saw the event as an opportunity for recognizing the students because they have worked so hard and juggled so many things and against all odds, here they are. Smells of hamburgers, hot dogs and chopped barbecue wafted through the air as guests filled their plates and stomachs. Seventies and '80s music wrapped around folks young and old, causing them to sway and sing along. Kids waited excitedly in line to have their faces painted or ascend the rock-climbing wall and ring the bell at the top. The cotton candy, Italian ice and funnel cakes summoned nostalgia and a youthful energy. In years past. Spring Fling was a much more formal, expensive affair. Later, the CCE SGA decided a better use of its funds would be to create a more family-friendly and cost- effective event. The current board decided it was more practical to offer a CCE scholarship as well as pay for the services of a counselor, both things some CCE students were in need of. According to sophomore and Publicity Director of the CCE SGA Monica Jones, long hours and several months went into planning. They wanted to be sure this event would be one Guilford College and the whole community would enjoy. "It is also a chance for the community to see what is going on at Guilford," said Jones. "It is important for us to make connections outside of campus." "I think it is great that the College thinks enough of CCE students to allow an occasion like the Spring Fling to take place," said junior Joyce Jasper-Morant. "It is wonderful." CCE students and one guest attended free, and two cans of food or $5 were donated for each additional guest. Collected food was donated to the Bonner House. Money raised will be donated to the National Kidney Foundation. "We are all Guilford students, young or old," said Lopez. "Having food, social gatherings and awards to validate our efforts is very important and necessary." In a carnival-themed game of Double Dare, where contestants had to answer Guilford-related trivia and perform challenges, CCE SGA members triumphed over Friend to Friend mentors. The winners dumped bowls of Jell-O and whipped cream on the losers’ heads. QM with Samir Hazboim, Community Senate president-elect BY ANTHONY HARRISON Staff Writer Q; How does it feel to be elected Community Senate president? A; Pretty cool. I didn't think it would be that big of a deal. I thought generally the people who go to Senate would be the ones who knew, but lots of people on campus the day after said to me, "Congratulations," and these were people I hadn't talked to in a while. So, it's helped me realize the position is something people know about. •V Q: What do you think should be Community Senate’s focus? A: The one goal I do have is to improve lots of small things on campus. Like, there's a bike rack by the old apartments that's down by the laundry room at the bottom of the hill, and no one uses it. We should move it to another site. And at the new apartments, there's a curb where there should really be a ramp you can bike up. Just really small things like that I think will help optimize Guilford. Q: Why did you apply to be president? A; I wanted to apply for it because I realized while working as president for ultimate frisbee that I really like logistical work. I like sending emails. I like chasing down administrators. I like going from meeting to meeting. It's not very draining work for me. 1 feel like it is for a lot of other people, but for me, sometimes it's really energizing. Q: Do you plan on continuing work with Ultimate Frisbee and The Guilfordian? A: I think I'll have to scale it back. I'm stepping away from president of Frisbee. I think I'm still going to try to practice and play when I can. But, The Guilfordian is something I still want to be involved with. Q: Do you have any other hobbies? A: I've been trying to pick up hobbies. I always try one and stick with it for a while and then kind of lose it. My latest one has been playing around with Illustrator and Photoshop and those kinds of things. I decided I want to start reading for pleasure again, to just read for the pursuit of knowledge. I want to read more philosophical texts. Q: What’s your guiltiest pleasure? A: I really like sappy, shitty action movies. I like imagining someone taking them seriously, because I can't. I see so many plot holes and bad acting that it's really easy to get lost in it. I sometimes just like to veg out on really shitty movies. Q: Anything you’d like to add? A; I think and I know that over the course of Senate there's going to be lots of hard decisions, and I can't always choose the right one, no matter how much I go for community feedback. I will make decisions that are unpopular. But, just know that I'm pretty receptive. If you see me, you can stop me and chat with me or shoot me an email.
