UPDATE: GuOford A message from Tlie Guilfordian
divests from Sabra
Meriwether Godsey will discontinue its
purchase of Sabra hummus based on Guilford's
ethical purchasing policy and the company's
preference to serve homemade products.
This would not have been possible without
the support of the Guilford • community. No
official statements were made by Guilford
acknowledging the Israeli apartheid; however.
Students Allied Against Privilege and
Supremacy and Students for Justice in Palestine
look forward to continuing to challenge the
Guilford administration to do so.
Respectfully,
SAAPS&SJP
As The Guilfordian has previously reported, we have been
working with a group of concerned students to improve
communication between the Guilford community and donors.
We have recently crafted a proposal to be presented to the
Board of Trustees via the Student Affairs Committee in June.
This proposal is to create a committee of students who
work closely widi the Office of Advancement and the Alumni
Association to assess the needs of the entire community
and to encourage donations targeted towards meeting these
needs.
Because our aim is to increase transparency surrounding
the donation system, we are trying to make our own efforts
transparent as well.VVe invite everyone to view the submitted
proposal on our website.

COMPILED BY BRYAN DOOLEY
"Sarah has been a great mentor and friend
for over twenty years. ... She combines high
academic standards with a deep concern
for students' lives and welfare. And as she
has pioneered the teaching of the history
of women, she has shown us the need to
investigate the lives of people placed on
the margins by previous historians and our
cultural norms."
-Hm Kircher, professor of history
Professor of History Sarah Malino Is retiring after teaching at Guilford for 34 years and
serving as a valued mentor to faculty and students alike. She will be missed!
"Sarah takes with her a great deal of institutional memory and experience that the college will
be poorer for having lost.... What she did as a woman, in earning her doctorate in the 1960s-70s,
then teaching full-time while raising a wonderful family, is nigh impossible to fathom. So many
forces were arrayed against her success and yet she persevered, all the while working to chart
new territory for Women's Studies and new ways of approaching American history. Sarah also
mentored me when I first came to Guilford as a young scholar, helping me to navigate the
sometimes choppy waters of life at a small college. In that she was always considerate and
compassionate."
—Alvin Dunn, assistant professor of history
"(Sarah) leaves such a large legacy to the College, seen in the department, her colleagues, and
her students.... One of her greatest contributions, among so many, was to make the history of
women and the historical study of gender a part of the Guilford history curriculum. These topics
are an accepted part of the way historians approach the past now, but Sarah forwarded them as
a topic of inquiry when many dismissed these topic. Hers was a courageous stand."
-Phil Slaby, assistant professor of history
