BIRTHDAY DOIN'S.
Yes’m! There was a birthday party
in “Jo” Shaffner’s room Tuesday night,
and this was an unusual one, for in
stead of the one conventional guest,
there were three claiming the day as
their own. As the snowy Angel’s
food did not give the ages singly or
collectively of these three lucky maids,
their names are subject to alphabetical
order; Ella Aston, Marion Cooper, and
Eleanor Shaffner. i
For half hour, merry pandemonium;
reigned, intermixed with lovely bon-:
bons, “more” cake, and the Vic’s latest.'
At the last tap of the light bell, there i
was a unanimous chant of, |
“Second by second, in every way, I
we’ve enjoyed this party more’n we
can say”, by the following: “Jo" Shaff-
ner, Dot Sessoms, “E. P.” Parker,'
“Pud” Griffin, Hannah Weaver, “Jim”
Pfohl, “Strowd”, “Hidtorj^’ Lyerly,
and Elizabeth Connor. I

Misses Bright McKemie, Julia Be
thea, and Alice Lyerly tied for the
prize—each of these having scored a
hundred. They drew straws for the
prize and Miss McKemie won. She
was presented with a box of beautiful
hand-made linen handkerchiefs.
A newsboy, impersonated by Miss
Ruth Reeves, entered crying “Extra
Salemite! News of great importance!”
A copy of the “Extra” was present
ed to each grade It read as follows:
"Announcing the engagement of
Miss Carolyn Bright McKemie to Mr.
William Richard Turman.
“The many friends of Miss McKemie
will be interested to learn of her en
gagement to Mr. Turman. She is the
attractive daughter of Mr. W. B. Mc
Kemie of Atlanta, Georgia, and has
been a student at Salem College for
the past four years. While here she
has maintained a very high standard
of scholarship, and has made many
many friends in the student body.
“Mr. Turman is also of Atlanta, and
holds a responsible position with the
Southern Railway Company. He is
known to us here, as he has visited at
the college on several occasions.
“The friends and classmates of Miss
McKemie join in wishing her much
success and happiness in the years to
come.”
Miss McKemie was presented with a
lovely hand-made linen towel by the
hostesses of the occasion.
Refreshments, fruit salad, sand
wiches, coffee and salted nuts were
passed.
After the defreshments a social hour
was held during which many of the
guests contributed original stunts by
way of entertainment.
Many happy wishes were extended
the guest of honor and many thanks
to the charming hostesses for the
pleasure afforded all.
