THE SALEMITE
FRIDAY NIGHT Y. W. C. A.
SERVICE
■Senior Class In Charge.
The last regular Friday night Y. W.
C. A. meeting was led entirely by the
Senior class. The meeting was opened
with the singing of a familiar hymn,
after which a scripture passage was
read, followed by a solo delightfully
sung by Miss Bessie Ffohl. Miss
Marion Blair, the speaker, was then
introduced by Miss Josephine Shaff-
ner, the president of the class, who
was presiding. Miss Blair talked upon
“The Passion Play”, which she saw
last year in Oberammagau. This was
a most interesting account. She ex
plained the conditions under which the
“Passion Play” is presented, and re
lated the events of the day on which
the play is given. Miss Blair dis
tributed several cards and photo
graphs, illustrating scenes and char
acters. Following the talk, those
seniors who had attended Blue Ridge
sang the song, “Lift Aloft the Light
of Love”, which was used in the con
test at the Blue Ridge Conference last
summer. The words o fthis song were
written by Miss Rachel Jordan, and
the music by Miss Charlotte Mathew-
soa.
The - .service was dismissed by the
repetition of the Y. W. C. A. motto.

MEETING

the good, bad, indifferent, the inter
ested and the uninterested out to vote.
It may seem an easy, unimportant and
unnecessary undertaking to the pub
lic. It is the master work of the
whole machinery and takes hard, con
sistent, untiring labor on the part of
serious minded men. He has to plan
for the worse, a rainy day, and provide
cars to bring in the lazy and the in
different.
He must also have competent men
on hand to give necessary information
to the ignorant. In this position Mr.
Stockton emphasized the necessary
use of tact. One old confederate who
one day wished to be of some use
stayed at the poles and cordially
greeted a good many arrivals with not
altogether successful results. One
elderly lady, upon arriving to vote,
was thus cordially greeted: “Why,
Miss So and So, you’ve no idea how
glad I am to see you. But I declare,
Miss So and So, I really wouldn’t have
recognized you, indeed I wouldn’t.”
“And why?”, questioned the con
fused lady, “wouldn’t you have recog
nized me ?”
“Why, I declare. Miss So and So, I
do believe your hair has changed
color*!”
He may easily imagine that the
Democrats didn’t receive her vote!
Mr. Stockton spoke of all the
speaking which is done for elections
as being, in his estimation, quite use
less, except that which is done on the
night of the election day itself. This
speaking usually is worth something,
said he, and it is for this that we save
our best and most powerful men. For
the last three years Mr. Josepheus
Daniels has been here for this occa
sion.
The vice-chairman of the county is
a woman who has complete charge of
the organization of the women voters,
and it was for her aid that Mr. Stock
ton appealed to us as future women
voters. It is our duty and responsi
bility as citizens of our country to use
intelligently the power that has been
granted us in this direction. Let the
men know that we are interested in
the machinery as well as the actual
election day and perform a duty
which it is a crime to neglect! Let’s
work and vote, Salem College!
Music Hour for Thursday, April
19th will be a recital by Academy
pupils.

his two children. After having been
subjected to all sorts of misfortunes
he finally came to the realization of
the fact that men’s lives are governed
by a higher power, in whose hands
they are as mere clay.
In addition to the Harold Lloyd
comedy on last Saturday night, a slow
motion golf picture was shown. This
picture was secured by the Athletic
Association for the benefit of our
amateur golfers.
“A Sailor-Made Man” was one of
the most enjoyable pictures that has
been secured during the year. The
audience was kept in a continual state
of laughter throughout the whole per
formance, and by the time the picture
was over any “Sat. Night Blues” that
might have been threatening had been
driven far from the hearts of the
Salem girls.
SUNDAY EVENING VESPER
SERVICE
Topic, “Blue Ridge.”
On Sunday evening preceding the
Easter recess, the Y. W. C. A. held a
vesper service in the living room of
Alice Clewell Building. “Blue Ridge”
was the main thought throughout this
meeting, and was carried out in the
talk, songs, and devotions. Dr. Rond-
thaler, the speaker, gave a concise and
accurate account of Blue Ridge, inter
preting Blue Ridge itself, with its re
ligious inspirations, amusements,
sports, and the numerous advantages
which just such a place offers. It is
indeed a privilege to attend a Blue
Ridge conference, and Salem desires
that her delegation be an unusually
large and representative one this year.
Following Dr. Rondthaler’s talk, a
familiar hymn was sung, and the
meeting was dismissed.

“Sailor-Made Man.”
The last two pictures shown by the
McDowell Club presented quite a
pleasing contrast. “The Power
Within”, a deeply spiritual picture,
was most appropriate to the Lenten
season. The story was that of a very
rich man who came to rely solely on
his own strength, proudly boasting
that he was a “self-made man”. Then
came a big financial loss followed by
the loss of his health and the death of
