SOBS vs. SMIES.
IMPRESSIVE VESPER SERVICE
OPENS YEAR FOR Y. W. C. A.
I know you’re awf’lly homesick,
’Cause I’ve been that way, too.
I’ve roamed about the campus,
Mopin’ worse than you;
I’ve wept a quart an hour—
Just couldn’t seem to stop—
Wanted to go home and let
My education drop.
The folks were sympathetic—
They didn’t even smile—
I wouldn’t have minded if they did,
’Cause weepin’ was in style.
’Most a hundred other -Freshmen
Went around with tearful eyes
And noses red with cryin’
And coblets, sniffs, and sighs.
It lasted for a week, and then,
We used some common sense—
We thought about the thing in full.
The cause and consequence.
First, from ornamental viewpoints
Cryin’ really didn’t aid
In “beauty first”, and that was why
We didn’t think it paid.
Then, everyone had work to do
And brains are best in youth—
So, if we worked, we’d have to leave
The sob-stuff out—forsooth.
You’ll find this dismal wailin’ ain’t
A bit of good to you—
Just smile instead and see if what
I’ve told you isn’t true.
You’ll catch the Salem Spirit—
It wUl drive the blues away
And you’ll like your college better
Every day in every way.
MORNING SERVICE AT HOME
MORAVIAN CHURCH
It has long been the custom of the
students of Salem College to attend
the Home Moravian Church on the
first Sunday of the opening term. Mrs.
Bahnson a prominent member of the
Ladies’ Auxiliary, extended a wel
come to the girls as they gathered in
the reception room and other ladies
greeted them as they entered the
church. The beautiful Moravian ser
vice was very impressive. Rev. J.
Kenneth Pfohl, the pastor, announced
•the subject of his sermon as “The
Partnership of Life”, taking his text
from I Corinthians, 3:9. He spoke of
the wonderful privilege of having
Christ as a constant partner and
showed how great was His influence on
the lives of His people. The entire
service brought before those present
the clear realization that it is the
working out of this principle in the
life of the Moravian church that has
made it such a power throughout the
centuries of its history.
Very fitting it was that the incom
ing Freshman class, the class of 1927,
should be first introduced to the
Young Woman’s Christian Association
of Salem College in action, and that
such an introduction should take place
immediately upon arrival. It showed
them that the girls who make up the
Y. W. C. A. cabinet are girls whose
watchword is service and who put into
that service every bit of their strength
and energy. Thus the new student
came into immediate touch with this
organization which plays such an im
portant part in our college life.
Sunday afternoon just at twilight, in
the simple but singularly impressive
service held in the living room of the
Alice Clewell Memorial Building, we
all discovered the secret of power for
the important service which our Y. W.
C. A. renders to every girl who comes
under its influence.
Preparation had been made for a
large attendance and the room was
filled almost to overflowing by the
time the company arose for the open
ing hymn. Miss Stipe then led in a
short prayer and Marjorie Hunt, the
vice-president, read the Scripture
lesson. The welcome by the president,
Lillian Watkins, assured every stu
dent, new and old, that she was not
only needed and wanted by the Asso
ciation but that she, herself, needed
the inspiration and help that connec'
tion with such an organization would
surely give her.
Although a few of the upper class
men had heard Mr. Vardell, the new
head of the Piano Department, in
organ recitals in Memorial Hall, many
of the Freshmen were anxious to hear
him for the first time. Those who had
had that pleasure were glad to renew
it and it was an added interest to
know that he was really a part of
Salem and not just a visitor. Thus it
was with perfect attention that those
present listened to his beautiful selec
tion.
This first Y. W. service of the year
closed with a hymn and the regular
benediction.
