SALEM CHOOSES ALL-
STAR FOOT BALL TEAM
Qualification: Pulchritude
Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The “Sale-
raite” sports staff has picked its
All-Star Big Five Football team.
But since we females are so preju
diced to good looks, we have decided
to pick the players for the team ac
cording to their masculine charm in
stead of their ability on the grid
iron Our selection has been made
from n group of pictures the “Jour
nal and Sentinel” sports staff go
kindly let us use. We tried to pick
tlie best looking man for each post,
but we realize that some of the
players were greatly flattered by
the pictures we saw while others
were done great injustices in their
attempts to appear ‘ ‘ tough’ ’ there
fore, if we have made any to ghastly
errors in our selection, we offer our
apologies now. We also apologise
for having to shift some of the play
ers from their original posts, for in
some cases there w^ere go many hand
some Hercules playing the same po
sition that we just couldn’t limit
our choice to two players.
Here is our idea of a good look
ing all star team:
(’o-Captains:
Dave Warden, Davidson, tackle
Bob Spangler, Duke, back.
Knds:
Horace Palmer, Carolina.
Nen Iverson, Davidson.
Tackle:
Fred Yorke, Duke.
Dave Warden, Davidson.
Guards:
Bob Alabaster, Duke
Jim Woodson, Carolina.
Center:
Bob Adams, Carolina.
Backs: ,
Bob Spangler, Duke.
George Wirtz, Wake Forest.
Paul Lazier, N. C. State.
Jim LaLanne, Carolina.
THE WESTWARD HO
QUESTION
In the final Associated Press foot
ball ranking poll of the year, ninety
sports writers and editors chose
Notre Dame as the Nation’s No. 1
team with Duke in third place.
Southern California’s Trojans, cham
pions of the Pacifc Coast Conference,
will have a chance to test the accur
acy of sports writers in ranking
football teams. The Trojans play
Notre Dame, Saturday and meet
Duke in the Rose Bowl, New Year’s
Day.
The margins separating the first
three teams voted on was not large.
Notre Dame w^as awarded top rank
ing by forty-eight votes; Texas
Christian U. drew twenty-three first-
place ballots, and Duke, fifteen. Ten
nessee collected the other four and
fourth place. Scoring ten points fur
a first- place vote, nine for second,
etc. Notre Dame earned the lead
for the third straight week with
823 points to 782 for the Horned
Frogs and 733 for Duke.
MORAVIAN COLLEGE
INVADES SOUTH
Sectional Claish Between
Moravian College and
Appalachian State
Supporters from Salem’s brother
school, Moravian College, one of the
strong small schools of the East, ar
rived today from Bethlehem and
made final preparations for their
game tomorrow with Appalachian
State in Bowman Gray Stadium. The
two intersectional rivals will meet
in the last football game for college
teams on North Carolina ground this
year. The kick-off is set for 2
o’clock. Both teams are reported in
tip-top shape after highly successful
seasons. The Mountaineers from
Boone have only a 7-6 defeat on their
record for the year. This game will
close Coach Kid Brewer’s career at
Appalachian. The Winston-Salem
boy, former star at Duke, is with
drawing from the football world.
(Incidentally Moravian College’s
Coach is Mr. Edwin Snavely.)
A r^uciion in the ticket prioe is
expected to prove popular. Student
tickets are on sale at Mr. Oerter’s
office.
