THE SALEMITE Friday, March 17,1939. pir jf “B” TEAM TOURNAMENT UNDERWAY Interest Centers On Second Basketball Series Theoretically Salem’s basketball season ended Monday night a week ago at the formal banquet with the awarding of the cup to the co-cap tains of the Senior team. Actually is it just starting for many of our players. A dreaded tie occurred in the “B” tournament leaving the Freshmen, Juniors, and Seniors each with 2 gaines to their credit. There was really nothing to do but start from scratch again. The first gaine in this turnament, on March 7, was a one-point victory for the Freshmen .over the Sopho mores in a game that held excite ment all the way. The final score was 24-23 with Mills and Harrell high scorers. The line-up follows: Freshmen Sophomores Poa. L. Bralower N. Suiter C. F. A. Mills L. Rice h. F. E. Betscher C. Harrell E. F. M. Craig P. McNeely C. G. L. Johnson J. Moore L. G. R. Thomas M. McGehee R. G. Substitutes: Freshmen: Petree. Sophomores: Linn, Campbell. A day later the Freshmen were badly beaten by the Juniora with' a score of 40-21. Mills made almost all the Freshman points, and several juniors shared high-scoring honors on that side: Sanford, Norfleet and McNeny. Line-up: Juniors Freshmen Pos. Sanford L. Bralower C. F. E. Stephenson, Nunn, DLxon, and Galloway received when they walked down the gym steps to play a doubles match in Badminton. The first two, Stephenson and Nunn, won the first game 15-8. The game held many thrills and surprise shots — long lift ones followed by smashes and drop shots. In the second game DeWitt Nunn tlie youngest player, took a spill in making a beautiful return on a drop slot. However, when the cock was back on his side, his partner, Mr. Stephenson, was unable to recover. The game ended with the score 15-10 in favor of the same team. The third game started out with a few spectacular shots by both teams, but as the_ game progressed, Nunn made a beautiful shot wliich included a spin and a simple top to put the cock over the net. It seemed to be Stephenson’s and Nunn’s night for they won all three games without too much difficulty. Although the other team wa.s good, it was far outplayed from the start. CORRECTION The Salem;te wishes to correct a serious error. Last week’s issue car ried the statement that the present Senior ba.sketball team had not lost a game this year nor last. However they did lose one last year to the present Sophomore class, 24-18. DARLIN* DIARY March 1, 1939—Darlin Diary: March is doing its best to liv6 up to its reputation — in like a lamb and out like a lion. Today has had a breath of Spring other than six- week ’s tests. March 2, 1939—Darlin Diary: No ticed big bursting buds on willow trees today; that ’s a sure sign. March 7, 1939—D. D.: Basketball season closing now; weather con tinuing Springishie. Looked for my tennis racket and balls in bot tom of closet tonight; found rack et but must have sent balls to the laundry with dirty clothes. Marcli 8, 1939—D. D.: Decided my tennis shoes are too worn from bas ketball season to last rest of year so got a new pair for 98c.. Can’t wait to use them; they look so alarmingly white after, the old pair. March 10, 19:9—-D. D.: Between ses- sions of note-taking for that term paper, slipped over to Bookstore and indulged in whole new set of tennis balls. Had man at Post Office stamp C. O. D. on them so I can identify my balls when we all start hitting flies. March 11, 1939—D. D.: If I hadn’t had this term-paper to finisji I’d sho scrambled down to the tennis courts for a game or two. Half the people in the Library felt the same way about it this afternoon I think. LATIN CLUB HAS ANNUAL DINNER (Continued From Page One) the members to be initiated were taken one by one and inducted into the club. As a fitting conclusion to the meeting. Virginia Bratton ex plained to the new members, now a definite part of the organization, the meaning of the symbols Alpha, Iota, and Pi. The new members are Betty Barbour, Eleanor Betscher, Louise Bralower, Euth Hege, Mary Worth Walker, Melba Mackie, Doris Shore, Marion Morris, Eachel Lam beth, Phyllis Gosselin. Marcji 13, 1939—D. D.; Term paper in! Put on my new sneakers and took new balls and ‘ ‘ Eeggie Back et” down for some doubles with the girls this afternoon. Darlin Diary we could have torn our clothes and put dirt on our heads; the courts aren’t fixed yet. Oh dear, we did so w;ant to play but it’ll be over a week before they’ll be ready. Hope I still want to’ play then, but I’ll probably have another paper or report to be get ting in by the time we can use the courts. Oh dear, now I’ll have to make my new halter instead of buying one. “Are you a clock watcher?” “No, I like outside work — I’m a whistle listener.” “Ql” that Satisfies with a Capital iJ Radio City’s world-famous “Rockettes”a«^/ CHESTERFIELDS ...two canH’be-copied combinations There’s skill and precision in the way the Rockettes dance and there’s skill and precision in the way the mild ripe Chesterfield tobaccos are blended and proportioned to bring out the best in each.
