Herald: Ladies and gentlemen, I am announcing from the Wicked Wood on the green before the Castle of Morgan le Fay. You are about to witness the most colossal tourna ment of the Middle Ages. The forces of King Oughter are meeting those of Morgan le Fay. It is a stupendous conflict between good and evil. In a few minutes you will see o nthe field a magnificent procession of chorus girls. They will form the letter O. As they take their places the Lesser Evils will parade down the field and form the letter M). “JIMMIE LUNCEFORD” . . . EEALLY PLAYS THE BLUES IN . . . (Curtain rises. Enter chorus girls led by Lynette as drum major. They march about the field once and then form the letter O. The chorus girls withdraw to right at back of stage. Enter nine Lesser Evils who march once about the field and form the letter M. They withdraw to left at back of stage). Herald: The opposing forces are coming on- the field. (Enter Knights singing with en thusiasm, to tune “Old Black Joe”): We’re coming, we’re coming For the tourney is today We’re out to oust the force of evil Morgan le Fay. (EnteC the ^x Deadly Sins, sing ing to tune: “Farmer in the Dell.”) They are carrying Battle Axes over shoulder). We’re out to win the fray, we’re out to win the fray. Bring on the battle ax, we’re ’bout to win the fray (Repeat). (They line up, facing the Knights). Herald: The forces are assembled on the field and the tournament is about td get under way. (To the accompaniment of music, each knight and the opposite Sin march to the front of the stage, clash sword and battle ax three times and march back to the far end of the line. This is repeated until every Knight and Sin has met.) Herald: Ladies and Gentlemen; this is the end of the half! The soore is notihing-to-nothing! Queen Morgan and her Forces: (Sing to tune “Maryland, my Mary land.”) : You canot win this tournament, Against our battle-axes; You’ll have to give up sentiment, And raise your income taxes. Your ladies all will weep and scream; To give up rouge and lipstick i Herald: (pointing to Dancealot): A brave knight of a valourous house. He will teach a lesson to his ene mies — Dancealot, eldest son of Prancelot, Count of Birmingham, Alabama. Watch now his deeds, all you who love brave actions. (As the Herald speaks the Knights and Sins line up again in Tournament formation. To music, they again march to front in pairs, the first Knight carrying a bowl filled with rice (instead of a spear). As the Sin raises hia battle-ax the Knight throws rice at him. The Sin slinks into the background and the Knight marches triumphantly down center staga to take his place at end of line.) Herald: Ladies and gentleman, the Knights have won the Rice Bowl, (The action is repeated, the 2nd Knight carrying the Sugar bowl. After the sugar is thrown, the Herald speaks). Herald: And the Sugar Bowl! (The 3rd Knight enters with boll of cotton). Herald (after action is comple ted). And the Cotton Boll! (The action is repeated with 4th Knight smoking a pipe. He takes tobacco from pipe and throws it at the Sin). Herald: (excited): And the To bacco Bowl! (The 5th Knight is sucking an orange. He holds it up and at sight of it the Sin slinks away). Herald: (More excited): and the Orange Bowl. (The last to step forward is King Oughter, carrying a large wooden bowl which contains four roses. He throws the roses at the Sin and as the Sin withdraws he turns the bowl upside down and stands on it). Herald: (more excited): And the Bose feowl! Ladies and Gentlemen, the Knights have won the tourna ment. You can hear the singing and shouting on the fiold. (Kinghts and chorus girls sing together to tune: “There are Smiles”): There are bowls they fill with cot ton,- There are bowls they fill with jam. There are bowls of oranges and lemons. There are bowls of beefsteak and of ham; There are bowls of roses and nas turtiums, There are bowls of rice and sugar, too. But the bowl to win King Oughter’s tourney, Is this bowl in which roses grew. King Oughter: I summon Morgan GALLEY ELEVEN 11 11 le Fay to acknowledge defeat! Queen Mjorgan: I am completely bowled over! King Oughter: And I hereby de mand the return of Merlin the Ma gician led captive by Vivien the sorceress. (Morgan le Pay gives a- fiendish but feeble cry as she steps back in to the group of Sins and Lesser Evils). (Enter Merlin followed by the Scribe. They walk to center stage. M;erlin sings sadly to tune: “For He is an Englishman.”): Merlin turns and starts to walk away, stops suddenly to speak to scribe) And add, “Beware of can non balls. (Merlin and Scribe go to side of stage). King Oughter: I summon all who dwell within my realm! (King Oughter draws Queen Grinydean to center front of stage. Enter Maid Marian, Lady of Shalott and Lily- mayd who are joined by their three Knights. Lynette and Gadabout step forward. Enter all characters and form tableau about King Oughter and Queen Grinydean). King Oughter: Noble Lady Grinydean And all who hear me, say This is a very pleasant spot Since we have downed le Fay In yonder castle you might dwell And tarry here about, But the Renaissance will get you If you don’t watch out! I think you Oughter hurry And be starting on your way You’d better take my kingly word It isn’t safe to stay.
