Page Four. THE SALEMITL Friday, May 1, 1942. MAY DAY CHAIRMEN AT WORK jL. MEET THE SALEM BEAUTIES Here are Wyatt Wilkinson, Chairman of May Day Committee, and Marguerite Bettinger, Chairman of the May Day Dance Committee “putting their heads together” to make this year’s festival one of the best ever produced at Salem. Continued From Page Two) Maid Barbara Hawkins of Black- stone, Va., is blond ,easy to get along with, and fond of practical jokes. She hopes gentlemen prefer blonds and she likes them to be dark. Sensible and moody all at the same time, she likes Brahms and knitting. > Miss Ceeeilia Xuchols of Char lotte, N". C., adds the striking note to the Junior list — Ciel is the tall willowy lass who can bo demure and devilish, angelic and abominable at practically the same moment. Of tremendous vitality — or limp as a wet dish rag — she is known for her clothes (the Carmen Miranda variety), her cracks, and her “man ner.” Ciel doesn’t believe in hasty marriages — she’s practically a con servative on a number of such points but with all that, she’s impulsive, has a wonderful touch with budgets, and underneath is the “gay young thing.” Alaid Carlotta Carter of Washing ton, N". C., completes the Junior list. Stie’s tall, has a ready smile, and a smooth soprano speaking voice. She likes ruffled dresses — but doesn’t wear them, although she does dress only to please heself and the mood of the moment. There’s something of the poet in “Cootie” and she likes to analyse things — but mostly she’s a family girl. She loves her family and wants someday to have one of her own complete with six children. She loves uniforms (this has no connection with the last item) and especially those of the air corps; she likes masculine men — tall and dark. Petite brunette with wise brown eyes adds up to Mary Jane Kelly Sophomore Representative from Fayetteville, N. C. She admits she doesn’t trust women, likes her men dark and not too tall — in pro portion sort of. She answers yes to war mariages though she’s not planning one, and she’s shy with strangers and talks a blue streak witli friends. If she had a million dollars she’d buy clothes with it and then Defense Bonds. Marian Burvenick of Wbodhaven, N. Y., is the smooth brunette who is that rare oddity — a Yankee with a southern drawl. Serene and sweet always, Marian is hoping to go to work this summer with, of all glam our jobs The Conover Modeling Agency. Burvenick likes her men conservative, easy to get along with, and not too heavy in conversation. STie likes clothes too, and is even tually hoping to get married and settle down to suburban life; Her favorite date occurs in “The City” — New York to us — and consists of dancing and dinner, perhaps a show. The Freshmen have two beau ties, both brunettes, as their entries. Miss Mary Tennille of Winston- Salem, N. C., has very black hair, creamy white skin, and eyes that flash out almost hidden by her cheeks when she laughs. She loves nothing better than to speed down a highway on a moonlight night in INSTALLATION OF NEW “Y” CABINET TO BE SUNDAY Sunday night. May 3, the instal lation service of new V. \V. C. A. cabinet members will be held. This is to be the traditional candle light service, all memliers of the old and new cabinets wearing white. Out going President Leila Johnston will deliver her message after which she will install incoming President, Barbara Hawkins. Next year’s cabinet members are: Barbara Hawkins, president; Fran ces Neal, vice-president; Elizabeth Bernliardt, secretary; Patricia Woltz, treasurer; Sara Barnum, Ruth O’ Neal, Lindy Stokes, Katherine Cress, Vivian Smith, Margery Craig, Mary Lewis, Aline Seville, Normie Tom lin, Katherine McGeachy, Josephine McLanchlin, Frances Crowell, Fran ces Jones, Emily Harris. a convertible — unless its taking a ride in a plane. Her favorite color is blue, and as for men — she re fused to describe him. Hailing from Brooklyn, N. Y., is a shy little, sweet little Freshman by the name of Rosalind Reisman. Nat urally she’s been homesick but her comments on Southern girls are pretty pertinent. She thinks they are slower than Northerners but a lot more friendly —. she doesn’t know any Southern boys so she hasn’t any comments to make on that subject. Her favorite song is “Faithful to You,” and “this in terview is slanted with a certain person in mind” she added. There they are —S'alem’s beauty concentrated into one Royal assem blage. Greek maids and maidens will they become for the ceremony of crowning which will bring the pageant to a triumphant close, then the Maids will drop their titles and put their tresses back into pig-tales.
