Page Four. THE SALEMITE Friday, March 12, 1943. BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT OPEN JUNIORS TOP SOPHOMORES The second in our annual series of intra-mural basketball games was played Wednesday, March 10, between the Sophomore and Junior classes. Determined and equally matched teams played a hard and fast game. The starting line-up for the Sophomores was: forwards Joy rianagan, Mary Stuart Snider, and Edith Stovall; guards—Joyce Wooten, Mary Lucy Baines, and Mary Ellen Byrd. Vhe starting line-up for the Juniors was: for wards—Mary Ellen Carrig, Betty Moore, and Erleen Dawson; guards —Sarah Sands, Mildred Avera, and Mildred Butner. The Juniors had the first center. Fast passing and excellent guard ing kept the score low for the first quarter with the Juniors leading, 8-3. The half found the Juniors still leading with the score 10 - 3. The Sophomores outscored the Jun iors in the third quarter, making the score 10 - 5. The final quarter found the Junior's the only scorers. The game ended with the score 12 - 5 in favor of the Juniors. The game was hard fought by both teams. Excellent guarding by both teams kept the scoring down for each quarter. The forwards made several good offensive attacks, but the guards kept the goals well covered. ' The next scheduled game is be tween the victorious Freshmen and Juniors. Paschal Shoe Repair Co. That made a cheering section of exactly one for the Seniors, and the Freshmen had little more support. It’s too bad, for the game was good—that is, the Freshmen exhibited almost professional basketball ability, and the Seniors showed admirable spunk and a will to win, although they lost. The Freshman line-up was as follows: Witherington Center Forward Wooten, L Forward Shore Forward S'ullivan Guard McLendon Guard Griffin Guard Humbert, M., and Jones were for ward substitutes. Mary Miller sub stituted as guard. The Senior line-up was as follows: McKenzie Center Forward Smith, F. This lovely and expressive song was arranged for strings by Grieg himself. The closing num ber of the program will be the Ada- giette from the “ L’Arlesienne Suite” by Bizet, played by the string quar'tej;. This string ensemble is doing ex cellent work, for which it deserves much praise; and it is filling in the keenly felt absence of quartet work of which we have been aware for years.
