Adele Chase To Head Future War Activities ADELE CHASE Adele Chase of Scarsdale, New York, was elected chairman of the War Activities Council for 1944-’45 at an election held on Tuesday, April 4. She defeated Emily Harris of Leaksville, N. C. In her three years on the campus, Adele has been (-onnected with var ious activities. She is a supervisor in the Bed Cross Surgcal Dressing Room on the campus and is on the staff of the Salemite. Since her freshman year she has becti a mem ber of the Pierrette Players. She is a member of the International Re lations Club and is active in sports. This year Adele has served as Chief Student Aii Raid Warden and as a member of the War Active Council. Her interest in war activi ties of all kinds will stand to ably fit her for her new office. President Represents College At liAeetlng President Rondthaler represented Salem College at the Council of Church-Related College's of Xorth Carolina meeting in Greensboro on April 18. This organization consists of 29 North Carolina colleges which are affiliated to exchange information and to promote unity of action among the member colleges, both in matters of academic standing and in affairs connected with legal and other problems. The President of the organization, Clyde A. Milner, Guilford College, president, and the program was directed by tlie Executive Com mittee, Dr. L. E. Smith of Elon Col |feg6, Favher Gregory Eichenl|aub of Belmont College, and Dr. E. J. Coltrane, Brevard C«Uege. Forming the nucleus of the pro gram, State Senator Hudgins spoke upon “Contributions of Church- Re lated Colleges to the State of North Carolina in the Post-War Period” and Dr. Gross, president of the American Council of Church-Related Colleges, spoke upon “Recent and Pending Legislation Affecting the Church-Related olleges.” Two Seniors Get Appointments Rebecca Cozart of Fuquay Springs, N. C., and Charlotte Richard of Woodstock, Virginia, have recently received their appointments for in tership in the field of dietetics after their graduation from Salem. Rebecca’s work will be at the Charlotte Memorial Hospital, Char lotte, N. C. and will begin on August 15. Charlotte will begin her work at the Duke Hospital in Durham on July 1. y.lV.CA. Elects Completing the elections of offic ers for the YWCA for next year, Rachel Pinkston of Fayetteville, N. C. was chosen vice-president; Jane Lovelace of Henrietta, N. C. sec retary; and Betsy Meiklejohn of Pawtucket, R. I., treasurer. TJie election was held by this year’s “Y” cabinet. Tlie president for 1944-45, Frances Jones, of Kin ston, N. C., was elected by the en tire student body. Surgical Dressings Room Has New Monthly Quota The April quota in the Surgical Dressings Room is 4500 bandages. This number must be completed be fore the end of next week. Con sequently, a larg number of work ers is needed to complete the quota. Everyone on the campus is urged to spend at least an hour a week in the Snrgical Dressings Room. The Surgical Dressings Room opened on Tuesday amdi is running on the regular schedule. Visitor Illustrates Flower Arrangements The Home Economics Club met Tuesdaj’ night in the Lizora Fortune Hanes Building. An intwesting meet ing was held with Mrs. Charles Grif fith as guest speaker. She gave an illustrative talk on flower arrange ments. Mrs. Griffith’s distinctive arrange ments of spring flowers in natural istic, Japanese, and modernistic forms well illustrated her points as she spoke. She not only told the club members of the basic principles of flower arrangement, but she also gave them many new tad unusual ideas. At the same meeting, a set of after dinner coffee cui>s was pre sented by the club to the Home Management House. UP TOWN MEETENO PLACE THE ANCHOR CO. “The Shopping Center” Freshman Dramatic Club To Present Two Plays The comedy, “One of Those Days,” by Margaret Cameron, and a tragedy, “Lost Victory,” will be give* here at the college in an evening performanc on May 11. The characters of “One of Those Days” are: Mrs. McRae, a flustered young married woman, Martha Boatwright; Vangi, Mrs. Archer’s coquettish colored maid, Coit Red- feam; Jane Baird, an unmarried friend of Mrs. McRae’s, Terrell Weaver; Natalie Cox, a Southern Friend of Mrs. McRae’s, Sheffield Liles; Muriel Jordon, a woman who believes that nothing good can ever happen, Teau Council; Ethel Pope, a womlan who sees the best in every thing and everybody, Rosamund Putzel; Sallie Wakefield, the do mineering but sympathetic friend of Mrs. McRae’s, Frances Law; Mrs. Archer, the wife of Mr. McKae’s boss, Ann Folger. The cast for “Lost Victory” is still tentative and will be announced later.
