Soprano
Gives Recital
by Mrs. J. D. Hamrick
Miss Catherine Marston Bunn,
soprano, was presented last Tuesday
night in Memorial Hall by the
Salem (Jollege School of Music. This
was the first graduation recital of
the year.
Miss Bunn is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. A. A. Bunn of Hendrson,
N. C. F/)r the past four years she
has been studying for the Bachelor
of Music degree, majoring in voice.
During three, years of this time she
was a pupil of Clifford Bair. This
year she concludes her voice work
at Salem studying with Mrs. Nell
Starr.
Miss Bunn presented a most in
teresting and attractive program,
ranging in type from the early
Italian to the modem American. Her
magnificent v^oice was a fine in
strument upon which to display the
worka of the masters.
In her opening group she sang
selections by Cesti, Handel and
Moir with lovely grace and smooth
ness of vocal line. The aria,
“ Abseheulicher! Wo eilst du hin”
from Beethoven’s FideUo, was the
peak of the evening. In the dramatic
and florid passages we really heard

her voice at its fullest.
The third group was also beauti
fully rendered. The contrasts in the
“Aufenthalt” and “L’Heure Ex-
quise” were very exacting proof of
Miss Bunn’s complete command of
technique.
Four modern songs in English
comprised the last group. In these
Miss Bunn portrayed with real feel
ing the varied moods of each song.
The fourth and last number, com
posed by our own Dr. Charles 6.
Vardell, Jr., was a delight and left
a refreshing flavor.
Miss Mary Cojons supjwrted Miss
Bunn beautifully with her under
standing and well balanced accom-
pamimeats.
