^7, 1946. THE S A L E MIT E Page' Three. WESLEY SNYDER J. B. SELP, tTR. Presenting Something New By Catherine Gregory “Wi'sley Snydor—He’s blond and i:i:irii(‘d" they said. “Interview liim.” It was like putting a Model T oil the Feriisylvania Turnpike during ru.sli hour. I was simply bowl ed over. I discovered an amazing ]>erson who, first of all, is not married! lie was appalled at the thought. He has lived in Winston ;ill his life . . . that is, till he was drafted for a year's training in the Army. ’‘Five years l.ater T was hand- a small wliite discharge .slip” he adds with a faint trace, of bitter ness. In the interim, he si'rved at various places here, among them 'onway, Arkansas. That, incidental ly, is a W A C Officer training center. Interesting, 1 remarked, while he screamed “ Dont print it or I’ll be ruined!” 1 promised I ivouldn’t. . . After the States, he was sent to I'ersia. Oh, I breathed, how wonder ful. ‘‘Ye.s, Persia," he sighed. “The land of mastery and enchantment. All I ever saw were mud huts, sand and palm trees. Shaggy palm trees, not the manicured kind potted in hotel lobbies.” I was somewhat shattered t)y this anl proceeded to change the subject. He does like Salem and he thinks the girls are wonderful. He admits that he feels a little strange here, but says he’s just pleasantly out of place. He is a voice major, bari tone, but has no operatic ambitions at the moment. He prefers crassieal music to popular, and likes operas better than the other forn;s of music. Wagner is his .special favorite' with Her Kosenkavalier and French operas coming ne.xt. Italian operas have good music, he thinks, but the drama and staging are i>oor. llagic has become second nature to him now, so he . calls painting his hobby. He uses oils, charcoal, tempera. “My parents hang them all over the house” he remarked. Questioning further, I found that he prefers the Old Masters, and otliers up to early Cezannes. He likes K1 Greco l>est of all.* And thus I discovered Wesley Snyder who ii^ witty, charming, in telligent, and quite a magician! By Mary Bryant The men’s lounge — screens of \smoke — incessant chatter — and in the midst of this is .1. B. Self, Jr. —one of Salem’s -15 coeds. His easy, friendly manner at once gave away the fact that he had ac(|uired the spirit of Salem. “Sure, I think the girls here arc friendl.y—e.vlremely so,” he exclaim- ('d! “Salem gets better every day.” .1. B., having graduated from Gray High School here in Winston- Salem, is a member of the fresh man class. Before entering Salem he served two years in the Army Air Corps where he had great hopes of becoming a pilot, but he was dis charged while still in Cadets. This blue-eyed coed is certainly a “jack of all trades.” He swims, hunts, plays a hot trumpet, and is a wizard at math. He hopes some day to become an electrical engineer, by the way, he is an only child, but does not seem to be the tra ditional spoiled brat. “What do the boys think of Salem and the girls? Bo they sit around and talk about us?’’ These questions came from numerous in quirers who passed through the smokehouse. Girls, brace yoursi'lves. “They don’t ever talk about you,” according to J. B. Yes, Salem’s 175th year has pro mise of being revolutionized by our coeds—especially the slow-talking, easy iiianni'red J. B.
