Physical Education Department
Has Complete Revolution
The Physical Bducation Depart
ment of Salem College has been com
pletely revolutionized from the de
partments of preceding years. In
stead of being placed in a regular
physical education class, each girl
is now allowed to choose a particu
lar sport that she is interested in
and to be taught that sport accord
ing to her ability. This year the in
structors in the Physical Education
Department are Miss Stout, Miss
Gueth, and Mrs. Lawson.
A great variety of sports have
been offered for the first semester;
these include archery, golf, modern
dancing, hockey, and tennis. It
has also been arranged that the
girls who are interested in riding
may receive instruction in the after
noons from the Philbriek Riding
Academy. A great deal of emphasis
will be placed on archery, and the
students will be taught to play both
on the inside and out of doors. Be
ginners’ golf will be taught h6re
at Salem, while the intermediate
and advanced golf classes will be
held on the golf course at Reynold’s
Park. Hockey, tennis, and modern
dancing will also be taught on the
campus according to the three
classes: beginners, intermediates,
and advanced pupils. Every after
noon from Monday through Friday
a gym lab is held from four to
ifive at which time the four classes
are instructed in hockey; this time
the members of each academic class
play together; Friday afternoon is
reserved for the Freshman Class.
There are four beginner tennis class
es, three intermediate tennis classes,
and three advancd tennis classes.
Five archery groups are being
taught; all five groups are beginners.
There are five beginner golf groups;
intermediate and advanced golf is
also being taught. There are six
freshmen hockey groups taught in
the morning, and there _are five
hockey groups taught in the after
noon.
Intramural sports will be em
phasized this year, and for the fall
semester, tennis and hockey tourna
ments will be held. Competitors will
be the four academic classes: seniors,
juniors, sophomores, and freshmen.
Tlie tennis tournament, to be held
in the near future, will be open only
to intermediate and advanced
players.
With the revolutionization of the
Physical Education Department and
its program, it is hoped and believ
ed that more girls will take an
active interest in sports at Salem
College.
