The French Club is planning to send packages to Suzanne Michaud, a 17 year old French girl. Suzanne’s father, an active resistant during the German occui)ation, was shot in 1944 by the Germans because he helped prisoners to escape. Suzanne s family is like thousands of other i’rench people, absolutely without resources. The French Club plans to send aid in the form of food, clothes, and other articles. A Wish . . Ah, but was it chance? You niaj be the one to whom these lines were meant to bring a spt'ciiil message. If you have moved youi- fingers across the magic surface of a ouija board or made a secret wish upon a star, then read c-u-el’ully on. Thi.s is for you. ^'es, T know you. Your future is an fipeu crystal ball to one svlio is Ihe eifrhth daughter of the eightii daughter of a Salem alumna. Do you wish to find out the actual facts of your future? Read on and cross this page with silver. (Jour nalism is on the march. Let’s keep the Salemite in step.) To see the days beyond in ab solute clarity, I shall first disclose the past by means of coffee grounds. (No grounds for complaint.) Let us turn back the cuts and overnights to November 28. I see a circle. I see a ship. I see a Miniature Annapolis ring on the finger of Vivian Shelton. It is grow ing now, growing into a ring and finger dance at V. M. I. attended by Kuth Hayes. Something tall, very tall, looms up to obscure al other visions. Is it New York skyscrajKjrs that Claire Phelps and Dot Massey are staring at? The buildings fade away before the amazement of Nat Henry and Gloria Paul. I see Robert Mont gomery assuring Gloria that he is Robert and Nat collecting a quarter. (There are times when this clair voyant business is better than a movie.) Sun, ocean, jnaybe moon. Coffee grounds tell all at Miami and Mac Clapp. I hear her chanting, “For the best combi nation of lioliday and trip, smoke Raleighs but go to Miami.” The sound of beating waves re mains. Four figures emerge from the fog of Carolina beach; Sarah Holton and Iris Stonestreet; Joyce Brisson and Frances Gulesian. The word Atlas repeats in my conscious ness. Could that mean a map? No, it conies to me now. A lifegaurd, big and strong. Now all sound is muffled before a terrific ear-splitting' yell for the University of Virginia. Or is it for Mary Prances King and Anne Barber who are watching the game? And from State College comes a clk'er from Pran to Frank or Winslow to Mayo. Soft music now evokes a vision of a dance and of Charlie Spivak, Kuby Moye, Pran Reeves, and Mary Wells Bunting. In this quiet atmosphere I also sec a farm and the name “Arden.” The spell is broken however by the arrival at the farm of Christine Gray, Julia Davis, Peggy Blum, Jane Mull, Margaret Newman, Dot Redfern, Molly Darr, and Lucy Scott. Trouble. Yes, that is the impres sion I receive from my coffee beans. Could I actually be seeing Beverly Johnson fixing a flat tire? All is failing now. The beans are very tired. Their touch with the supernatural has been broken. Per haps another day they will again be able to aid me in the revelations of the unknown. Vou ask a question? What about the future? My dear child, the future is up to you. Candle Tea Is Annual Event By Pierano Aiken Every year amid the rush of the Yule season when the letter opener begins to look like a dagger and a dagger seems a good way out, the Moravian ladies invite us over to the Brothers’ House across the street. Here’s a moment of relaxation for the putting away of math problems and drastic notions. The event is called the Candle Tea, and is be ing hold Thursday and Friday of this week from 2 until 9 p, m. W'hen you appear at the door a figure dressed in early Moravian costume receives you and your quarter. Taking a candle^ in hand, she leads you down the ancient stops to the first basement. An odor —so different from term-paper ink or starfish pickled in formaldehyde —rises to your nostrils—hot bees wax! In a room to the left more solemnly clad dames putter around making candles to bo used in the Christmas love feast. After a few minutes your guid ing spirit loads onward to the second basement. There a whole tunnel is devoted to the manger scene called the putz (to rhyme with foots). Resides the traditional nativity picture there is a planta tion scone and a charming minia ture of Balmoral Victoria’s Scottish castle. ^ ou’re entranced like a child in fairy land. Da}? Student Center Has Face ^^Lifting^* By Debbie Darr If you should walk into the Day Student smoke house to .see the entire congregation watching the ceiling, don’t be alarmed! It isn’t the human fly—. Or should you sc?e all the furniture stacked up in the hall, don’t worry! It isn’t moving day—. In fact, it’s only because the “great day” has finally arrived! The painters have come and the new Day Student smoke house is rapidly changing colors. The day students, in spite of stiff necks and paint-smeared faces (accidental— oops—so sorry), are glad to be play ing leopard for this change in spots —(color, that is!).
