Salem Athletic Association Joins National Federation Announeomeut was made today by Henrietta Walton, president of the Athletic Association, that the Salem College A. A. had joined the Athletic Federation of College Women. The A. F. C. W. is the national student federation of the college women’s Athletic Association. It was established in 1916-17 to dis cuss pertinent problems which are common to all athletic associations. •Since that time it has continued to function in spreading high standards of sports and recreation throughout the country. This spring, April 18-20, the A. F. 0. W. is sponsoring its eleventh national conference at the Woman’s College of the Cniversity of North Carolina in Greensboro. Exams Begin January 24 First semester examinations begin Friday, January 24 and continue through Friday, January 31. Thurs day, .January 23, is Beading Day. This day is dc^voted to study and every student is expected to re main on campus. InAppreciation I would like to thank the members of the Y.* W. C. A. for giving me the opportunity to attend the Na tional Student Assembly held at the University of Illinois, December 27-January 3. Craig Yoder, of the biology lepartment at Lenoir— Hhyne College, spoke of biology in everyday life—its contact with hu man welfare—^at the meeting of the Lablings Tuesday night in Park Hall. Prof. Yoder discussed two biologi cal successes, the human race and insects. He sj)oke of the beneficial and harmful insects and the con trol of harmful insects as combated with modern science. When discussing the human race iuid the specific drugs used to kill l)acteria diseases. Prof. Yoder named the newer bacteria killing chemi cal drugs that are now available— sulfajiflamide, sulfathiazole, p‘ni- cillin, and streptomycin. Prof. Yoder closed his speech with I lie Sdea of Science and the Social order. Up until now our pattern of thinking has been humanistic rather than scientific, but now due to the conditions of the world where there are food shortages, atomic re lease, etc., human affairs must be concerned with the scientific social order. Al umna Gives Large Donation Miss Dell Norfleet, alumna of Salem College and now Head of the Spastic Glinic for children of Duke University, has recently given her second contribution to Salem College. Last year Miss Xorfleet contributed to the Endowment Fund, and this year she has donated a generous sum towards a new Park Hall. Miss Norfleet is at the present time enrolled at the University of Ntfrth ''Carolina for special courses. In the early spring she is to be the guest speaker for the Lablings.
