Analysts Report Commentary, Headline News
Washington reports at this writ-
ing (April 26) indicate that Con
gress will pass the Greek-Turkish
aid bill by heavy majority and with
heavy hearts. Our lawmakers may
give the president their loyal sup
port, but how they dread it!
In Palestine, the Acting Chief of
Haifai Criminal Investigation De
partment was shot dead, raising the
number of British police casualties
as a result of terrorist action in
two days to six killed and five in
jured.
Secretary of State Marshall who
returned Saturday, April 26 from
Moscow, had no direct comment to
make in the recent ’foreign minis
ters conference. His only state
ment was, “We attempted to do
our best in the interest of the Unit
ed States and the world so people
can have the peace of mind and
comforts of life to which they are
entitled as soon as possible.”

The apparently irreconcilable
claims of Jews and Arabs to the
control of Palestine will be brought
before the. TJ. N. at a special ses
sion of the General Assembly which
opens at Flushing Meadow, Queens,
on April 27.

By destroying Helgoland, an is
land in the North Sea, the British
have tried to make certain that
the Germans can never build an
other naval base there. Hereafter
the island will be inhabited by
birds and even they will be watch

Wilde Comedy
The Salem Players will present
Oscar Wilde’s ccmedy, The Import
ance of Being Earnest, in Old Chap
el May 7 and 9.
Sal Mills, president of the club,
will act as student direc*tor and
prompter for tlie performance. Anne
Kivers is stage manager, and Joy
Martin is in charge of properties.

M usic Hour
Compositions
Are Announced
Music Hour Thursday May 8 will
feature a group of compositions by
senior music majors. Mary Hackney
will open the program with two.
ori^nal compositions, “Twilight’*
and “Postlude”. Carolyn Furr, pi
anist, will play “Nocturne”, “Blu
es”, and “Andante”.
Sarah Haltiwanger will play three
of her own piano compositions,,
“Etude in G Sharp Minor”, “In
termezzo”, and “Pagan D^nce”.
Becky Clapp will sing her “I
Have Heard” and will present her
piano composition, “Prelude” “Cap
rice”. Jean McNew’s compositions
to be used on the program are“ Up
stairs”, a song and “A Dream” for
piano. Janie Mulhollem will sing
“A Lady Thinks She Is Thirty”
and “Tides”. Gwen Mendenhall
Yount will close the program with,
“May Night” and “Moonlight”.
Teachers Leave

years. Not only has his work as
a teacher and campus leader been
appreciated by both students and
administration, but he has per
formed a rare service to many com
munity agencies in his capacity as*
psychologist. We will all hate to
lose this good friend.”
Mr. Evett came to Salem Col
lege in 1945 from Boston, Mass.,
where he was instructor in the
Vesper George School of Art. Be
fore his Boston appointment, he
taught in several high schools in
Denver, Col.
He has received national recog
nition for his art work, and re
cently won first prize in the $1,000
art competition sponsored by the
North Carolina Art Society.
In his work as director of the
Salem College Art Gallery, the
young painter brought several ex
hibits of American contemporary
paintings to the campus and com
munity.
Mr. Evett’s new work will con
sist of contacting young artists and
arranging for them to go to Hot
Springs.
