Mr. Lerch Will Conduct Local Civic Orchestra The Winstou-Salem Civic Orchestra is presenting the first in its series of concerts Sunday afternoon, Nov ember 23rd, at 3 o’clock in Eeynolds Auditorium. Mr. James Lerch, head of the violin department of the Salem School of Music, is conductor of this organization. Salem students, who are members of the orchestra, are Bennie Jo Michael, Lucy Harper, Carolyn Love lace and Daniel Hodge. The Civic Orchestra is presenting three concerts in the 1947-48 series. Student series’ tickets may be pur chased for $1.50 from any ^member of the Choral Ensemble. The Winston-Salem Civic Orches tra has grown in the last six months from the original twelve to the pre sent forty. The personnel of the orchestra includes people in all walks of life—teachers, clerks, students, business men and women, doctors and housewives. All of them give their time voluntarily. The main purpose of the organi zation is to bring the musical de velopment of Winston-Salem and the surrounding communities up to the same high level it has reached in industrial and educational fields. I Brona Nifong Will Marry Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Harrison Nifong, 600 West Street, have an nounced the engagement of their daughter, Brona, to the Reverend Charles Edward Roy of Brevard, soil of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Roy of Birm ingham, Alabama. The wedding will tate place on December 20 at Cen tenary Methodist Church. Brona, an alumna of Salem Col lege, is now secretary to the presi- Mr. Lerch is vitally interested in^ dent, Dr. Rondthaler. Her resig nation of this position will become effective December 1. Mr. Roy a native of Alabama, has been teaching at Brevard College for the past three years. He re ceived his B. D. degree at Emory University and his A. B. degree at Piedmont College, Georgia. The couple will make their home in Brevard. all phases of music as it can best serve the needs of the community. Salem To Be Entertained The Student Body, last week in Assembly, voted on whether or not to I^ave Salem-Davidson Day this year. The results were: yes, 221; no, 46. Come early to make your selections. SALEM BOOK STORE Mrs. Hall Speaks To Lablings Mrs. Laura Thomas Hall spoke to the Lablings on the subject “The Woman Chemist in Textiles,” Mon day evening. Mrs. Hall presented the advantages and disadvantages facing the woman in industry, and gave some practical adice for as piring chemists. Mrs. Hall is a Salem alumna. She was one of the first to receive a degree in Chemistry at Salem, and is the only Salem graduate to re ceive a Ph. D. in Chemistry. She is now associated with the research laboratories of Kendall Textile Mills. Try This! Here’s a contest that you can’t lose! All entrants will win prizes. B'Oys all over the state have been on the run; girls have been Sadie Hawking. The highlight of festi vities at Carolina was a football game between Phogbound and Fort- escue. Phogbound with the help of a wooden blockade ,on the goal line to prevent a Fortescue score won with a score of 14-13. Cjommunists at Carolina in the opinion of a DaUy Tar Heel colum nist, backed by an explanation of a psychologist, are merely a group of people who feel neglected and to get attention (which they certainly did) resorted to Communism ... a few years back the neglected group reported to gold fish. What next? Davidsonlan’s advertising is de lightful.
