Abbie Hopes To Produce Annual Despite Annnoying Obstacles
By Betsy Hicks
Abbie Suddath, editor of “Sights
and Insights,” sits in her office in
the basement of Lehman. The cast
that encloses her left leg rests on
the top of her desk beside six file
boxes of snapshots. Beside her,
Mary Oettinger, business manager,
private secretary, and right-hand
girl sits in a straight-backed chair.
The office is hot and stuffy. “Even
the roaches fall dean on the floor
from the heat,” Abbie says. The
sound of the Salemite's typewriter
comes through the door, and the
fan on the desk only faintly stirs
the hot air in the room.
The annual staff works almost
every night in the office to meet
the November 25th deadline. Class
editors, Pat Howell, assistant edi
tor, and Cathy Gilchrist, associate
editor have been working on class
pictures for the past two weeks.
An average of 30 students a day
forgot to have their pictures taken.
With her broken foot Abbie says
she is especially thankful for their
new phone which saves steps over
cobble stones and up stairs. She
adds ruefully that, if you want to
get in touch with anyone in Strong
or on third floor Bitting though,
it’s quicker to walk.
Besides forgetful students, the
camera gives the most trouble.
Abbie has set up Libbie Hatley in
the library three times, and the
hundreds of dollars ahead in ad-
selling. Her favorite people are
Missy Allen, “an angel in disguise”,
and Anna Transou and Carole
’em.” Mr. Hill comes next. He
keeps her finances straight and uses
her bookkeeping system as an ex
ample to the Treasurer’s office. You
Class editors Sally Beverly, Gayle Venters, Colquit Meacham, and
Donna Raper are busy in the new catacombs.

flash bulbs have failed to go off
three times. “It only works when
we get back in the office,” she says,
“Sellars took Muggeridge with a
Brownie Hawk-eye.”
Pictures seem most important to
Abbie. She gives no clues to her
theme, other than “It’s different,”
but says that instead of taking two
pictures and choosing one, as most
editors do, she is taking ten to
choose from. “If you don’t see
yourself in this annual, you ain’t
been outside your room!” she mut
ters.
Abbie nominates Gay Austin,
head of the new club committee,
as the Most Harrassed right now.
She names Mr. Yarborough Salem’s
Most Dependable, and the only one
who is always good-natured as well
as helpful. Another of Abbie’s
favorites is Mr. Grigg —you have
seen him dressed in tweeds, carry
ing tripod and camera around the
square. She smiles and says he
took her picture with L. B. J. at
Wake Forest last week, and Abbie
was disgusted when I asked,
“Who?”
All of Abbie’s plans for the an
nual will be in vain, however, if
Mary doesn’t get the money. Mary
commends the juniors for being
