Page Eight Towne *n Sports Travel Tennis Players Meet Feisty Court Matches the SALEMITE by Allison Towne It seems that we Salemites, be cause we are so active in our aca demic pursuits, have let the Wide World of Sports, both on campus and off, go slipping by. Although many of us actively participate in some physical activity, it takes a major attraction like the Olympics, Ruby Begonia as Hockey Home Coming Queen, or a cute date to really bring our sports interest to life. Hopefully this gross neglect will end when our term papers and exams do, but I doubt it. In the meantime, Salem’s sports news as well as reports from all over the globe will be provided here for those Salemites who wish to im press their dates, win a radio sports quiz or who, better yet, are just plain interested. These past few weeks, tennis has been the main activity here on cam pus. Several Salemites have parti cipated in tournaments sponsored by other colleges. Four girls repre sented Salem at Chapel Hill on April 15 in a double elimination tourney with Carolina as host. Leigh MacDonald was successful in her opening match against a St. Mary’s player before bowing to a Greensboro College representative. Boodie Wiltshire, Salem’s other singles entry, lost in the first round to a Duke player and was then eliminated in consolation play. Leg. Board Announces Changes Legislative Board I. II. IV. V. VI. May 1, 1972 The meeting was called to order by President Christina Spence. There will be a SGA meeting May 4, 1972 at 1:15 p.m. and the Awards Day assembly will be May 11, 1972 at 1:15 p.m. The students' representatives to Faculty Advisory Board were elected. Leigh McDonald presented tentative plans for FITS and Founders' Day. FITS will be Sunday, September 24 through Wednesday, September 27. These plans were approved. The petition for smoking in the dorm rooms was passed and sent to Faculty Advisory Board. A poll will be taken in the SGA meeting Thursday to determine student opinion. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned. Anne Coxhead and Jane Lock- wood teamed up as Salem’s doubles entry. They were successful in their first match defeating the Guil ford College doubles team before losing to Duke’s representatives in the second round. Boodie Wiltshire left Tuesday to represent Salem at Mary Baldwin in the Middle Atlantic Lawn Ten nis Association Invitational which runs from Wednesday to Sunday. In team play the Salem netters have had two matches with Wake Forest. Rain forced the ending of a match here at Salem last week with Salem leading as play ended. The re-match held at Wake Forest this past Tuesday saw Peggy Spil- man and Boodie Wiltshire victori ous both in their singles and doubles matches. Wake took the rest of the matches with Trina Griffith, Jane Lockwood, Margo Woodin, Madelyn Rankin, Karen Lancaster and Anne Coxhead parti cipating. Student-faculty tennis is still going on on most Saturday morn ings. “The more the merrier” is the prevailing attitude, so feel free to hit the courts first chance that comes up.
