Student Intern Gains Good Experience By Debbie Hudson There is a first time for everything and this past fall, Carol Coggin was a first. In fulfilling an internship requirement for her American Studies major, Carol worked in .he Winston-Salem Evaluation Office. Previously, all American Studies majors have worked in Old Salem. Kathy Watkinson, the first American Studies major in 1977, worked in Old Salem followed this year by Marie Camp, Holly Freeburg and Leigh Shearin. The American Studies internship is counted as one course credit and is completed along with three other academic courses. Dr. Jerry Pubantz helped Carol to arrange her program. He met with her once a week and assigned her reading material throughout the term. In addition to her three regular courses, Carol spent three afternoons a week from one until five in the City Evaluation Office. The Winston-Salem Evaluation Office assists the city manager in evaluating city departments and projects. For example, while Carol was there, they evaluated the city’s public safety program facilities. Carol’s job brought her m contact with many other city departments including personnel, public relations and budget. She attended committee meetings, delivered memos, worked on city budgets and learned fundamentals of government organization. Carol speaks very highly ot her total learning experience and of Allen Joines, her off-campus advisor. He encouraged her to participate in the government procedures and he helped her to meet people in this field. This experience has not only given Carol general knowledge about our city government, but it has given her an opportunity to begin a career in this area. CAROLCOGGIN In fact, Carol is encouraging Jo Beth Allen, who is beginning her internship this spring, to get involved with this program. Jo Beth may not be the first, but this program certainly seems to deserve a second. Model U. N. Cont’d. from one German Democratic Republic’s United Nations Mission on Wednesday.
