Salemite, April 7,1978, Page 4 Journalism Workshop Planned At Wake Forest This Weekend INCUNABULA Deadline The 1978 E. E. Folk Journalism Workshop, featuring 14 speakers headed by Clifton Daniel, a former editor of the New York Times, will be held April 7 and 8 on the campus of Wake Forest University. The workshop is a biannual event endowed by the E. E. Folk fund and established in honor of Professor Emeritus of English E. E. Folk. Lester Tanzer, managing editor of U. S. News and World Report, will lecture on “Producing the Weekly News Magazine” Saturday, April 8 at 11 a.m. and will participate in a forum discussion with Clifton Daniel on the topic, “Is the Press Becoming Too Powerful?” on Friday, April 7 at 4 p.m. Daniel will speak at 8 p.m. Friday night in Winston Hall, room A, on “Newspaper Chains: Saviour or Menace.” Other speakers from newspapers in addition to Daniel will be Charles Babcock of The Washington Post on the role of the press in the Korean in vestigation; George Minot, assistant sports editor of The Washington Post, on sports- writing; Albert R. Conference Correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, giving “A Journalist’s View of National Politics” and Robert Allen, editor of The Wake Weekly, speaking on photo journalism. Speakers from magazines will be Staige Blackford, editor of The Virginia Quarterly Review, Bob Hall, managing editor of Southern Exposure, who will speak on “Current Trends in Alternative Journalism,” Robert Altman, senior editor of Nation’s Business and Tanzer. Representing broadcasting will be Robert Krulwich, national editor for National Public Radio, giving a talk entitled, “Unfit for Broadcasting,” Mary Starrett, anchorwoman of T. V. Eight News on “Is T.V. News Jour nalism or Show Biz,” and Gene Overby, sportscaster for WXII, Channel 12, on “Sportscasting, the Fun Part of Broadcasting.” Reed Kramer, managing editor of The African News, a news bureau out of Durham, will speak on “How a Specialized News Bureau Fills in the Gaps.” The workshop will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday af ternoon and Daniel will speak that night at 8 p.m. Speakers will resume Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and run through 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The final deadline for sub missions to the spring issue of Incunabula is Monday, April 10, 1978. We would like to encourage all students, faculty, and staff of Salem College to contribute to Incunabula.
