To the Editor
This letter is in response to the editorial in the last
Salemite referring to the parking situation. It is
definitely a problem at Salem College and as members
of this community we should all co-operate to solve it.
The source ot uproar is not one lad> in Old Salem, it is
the entire Salem Community and the church mem
bership. For the past two years, Arthur Spaugh, from
Old Salem, Inc., has addressed us several times, each
time pleading with the students to help with the parking
situation. Reverend Wayne Burkette has also asked the
members of Salem College to help. Pressure is being put
on the administration to do something about the
situation.
The new policies, which seem to be the only solution,
are as follows:
(1) Anyone parked on Blum St.,,Walnut St., or in front
of resident’s homes on Church St. between 9:00 a.m. and
10:00 p.m. will have her keys taken for one week. These
hours have been set so that no one has to park her car in
the parking lots after 10:00 p.m. for reasons of security.
(2) Anyone parking on any of front campus on Sun
days from 9:00 a.m. until noon will have her keys taken
for one week.
(3) Parking in the FAC should be in student spaces
only. This rule is being enforced, also.
The reason that the new parking policies seem
“drastic and exaggerated” is because the committee
has been patient all year, with no results. After con
siderable thought, many memos, letters, maps and
discussions with violators, the committee has found the
new policies the most effective.
The parking situation is shameful and has been for
years. Hopefully, with everyone’s cooperation, the
problem can be solved.

Cont’d. from one
The European university
system is drastically different
from the American system.
Academic, social and private
lives are sharply divided. There
is no on campus housing as we
know it. Students live at home or
they live in apartments.
Therefore, there is no “shelter of
college”, i.e., provided housing,
meals, etc. The student is ex
pected to gain this on his own,
thereby becoming independent
before many American students
who live on campus for their
college careers and have
everything provided.
The comments attributed to
Sabine concerning social life at
Salem were made in relation to
academic-social interaction in
German schools. The universities
there have no connection with big
party weekends (a la IRS, for
example) because academic and
social life do not merge. They are
two sharply divided worlds whose
boundaries never cross.
Naturally it would seem that we
are so concerned with parties
because as a campus community,
everyone is aware of upcoming
events.
Classroom experiences have
proved to be very different for
both girls here from in European
schools. Sabine and Katarina
were suprised at the lax
classroom participation. They
have been accustomed to being
responsible for more than their
homework assignment. Reading
newspapers and being able to
form an opinion on world events
was highly stressed. Their
societies are much more
politically oriented than
America’s, and student opinions
on these issues are a major part
of their learning experience.
These and other opinions are
voiced in classroom discussions
and encouraged by professors, a
practice both found not practiced
by many Salem professors.
Sabine and Katarina said that
their experiences here at Salem
have been rewarding ones, and
both hate to leave the many
friends they have made here.
Sabine, Katarina and the
Salemite editors hope that this
article has clarified the issue of
their misrepresented comments
as they appeared in the Journal
article. Amanda Vannoy
