We hope now that the rest of Salem College understands our position and our decision. January Update To The Editor. Babcock House Council Dear Editor, Dear Editor: We would like to use the Salemite’s letters column, please, to thank Salemites for their prompt and Like many work-weary Salemites you probably can tlunk of countless reasons why you should not par ticipate in student government. Since you are already aware of those reasons I will not waste words repeating The January question naires are .currently being evaluated by students in terested in bettering our January program. They are compiling a list of all suggestions and criticisms. The January Committee should have this data out in about two weeks along with proposals for guidelines and revisions. A workshop will be formed to help the faculty develop ideas for new programs and a bigger catalogue including more internships. generous response to the cry for help on the occwion of t^em. Instead, I would Uke to offer some valid reasons to the luncheon for Governor Hunt on Febimary 20. The show why getting involved is worth your time, energy, -Security Report weather made it likely that attendance for his address in jjjjjj courage, our refectory would be sharply cut, but the wonderful Being in any position of responsibility is a great way to young women of Salem came through again! Thanks to ggj jq know yourself. As House President in Clewell last them, it turned out to be a great occasion. Appreciatively, Whitty and Merrimon Cuninggim year I was constantly being confronted with my limitations and my strengths. I made plenty of mistakes, but was able to do so in an atmosphere where they were quickly forgotten. Also, now that I am looking for a “real job” I know more the kinds of jobs I can and cannot do. Dear Editor, Being in a position where you must relate to other people, often times people not of your own choosing, is a chance to see how you relate to them and how they react As members of Babcock’s House Council, we feel that to you. Learning to communicate effectively with my we were unfairly represented at the last SGA meeting, peers and my superiors is a skill that I use daily and We would like to explain the cricumstances and justify plan to use later on. our decision concerning the tape show in Babcock’s basement. When the request for the use of the basement came to Ms. Bell, she passed it on to us. We did not sit down and decide as a group; instead, we got a general consensus of the feelings of the girls in the dorm. Most of the girls were not in favor of having the tape show in our basement for several reasons. Babcock would not have been allowed to have visitation with the tape show. That is a Salem College rule which we could not have changed. As many girls were having out-of-town guests for the weekend, they felt it would have been unfair to them to have to give up the privacy of their rooms. Other girls who were not planning to go felt that the tape show would have infringed upon their privacy also. Finally, participating in student government will give you a sense of responsibility and belonging. Despite my failures the sense of contribution I have felt has, in the long run, made me feel better about myself and others. Through involvement in student government you become involved in college government; thus, you learn firsthand about the structure of an organization. Being on a Trustee committee this year has put me somewhat on the “inside” of the college structure. Learning proper channels to follow when instigating change, when ^waging a complaint, or when offering suggestions is a knowledge I am sure I will use throughout my life. Although SAC members should clean up, the un pleasant smell of stale beer in our lobby and basement would have been unavoidable. Since this was a big weekend and not just a mixer, we felt it would have been unfair to us and our dates to have to put up with the mess and smell throughout the rest of the weekend. We also wanted to be able to use our date rooms, TV area, and pool table in the basement on Sat. and Sun. Salem is small and thus offers opporhinities to students that larger schools cannot. What’s more, at Salem the faculty, administrators, and other students are willing to cooperate with you and help you when necessary. Student government involvement is not for everyone; however, if you feel even slightly inclined to get involved and you want to grow personally and socially, then the chances are here for the taking. SGA means work, it means sacrifices, but it means a better you. Be selfish and participate! We regret that the tape show had to be cancelled. We had hoped that there would have been a more suitable Robin Maxey Campus Security -- a phrase that is at the center of controversy on Salem campus. In an interview with Bill Talbert this week The Salemite got the complete story on security. Mr. Cottle as security chief for the college and academy hires, trains and supervises all guards employed by Salem. Currently, there are 3 full time guards and 4 working part-time. All seven have had previous experience in security, and have undergone training and periodic refresher sessions at Salem. There are four guards on campus from sunset to one a.m. and two from one a.m. to six a.m. during the week. On weekends one guard is on campus 24 hours a day. The primary function of security according to Mr. Talbert is “to protect people and property” and “not to catch criminals”. Accor dingly Salem security works in co-operation with the Winston-Salem police department. Our guards may apprehend criminals on campus, but they can not arrest. If they or a member of the Salem community is under attack they may use force, including their guns. Salem maintains a policy of prosecuting these arrested on campus, but must be careful to have sufficient justification in order to avoid a counter lawsuit. Guards cover the entire campus in their rounds. They can be located through their beepers or located in the basement of Lehman Hall.
