Page 2, Salemite, September 14,1979 Editorial Editor’s Note: The editorial space for this week has been conceded to S.G.A. for their initial report to the Student Body. Another executive editorial is scheduled for next week. S.G.A. Report Yes! Student Government is ALIVE and WELL! And yes, we do many more things than just have S.G.A. meetings every second Tuesday of every month. Unfortunately though, the student body is more often than not unaware of just what S.G.A. or Exec. Board does. Traditionally there seems to have been a lack of communication between S.G.A. and its constituents. We, the S.G.A. Executive Board, are determined to remedy this lack of communication by reporting directly to the student body -- be it through Leg. Board representatives, S.G.A monthly meetings, or the column which we will run every other week in The Salemite. Student Government can only be a vital part of Salem if there is communication, openness, and exchange between the students and their elected representatives. In order to facilitate this open exchange I shall be reporting on the inter-workings of both Exec. Board and Leg. Board as well as any additional work S.G.A is doing. 5.1.D.’s - S.G.A. pays for this and it seems some film was ruined - thus we have to pay double. This needs to be investigated. 6. Regular weekly meeting time for Exec. Board was set for Monday at 6; 30. Leg. Board: Sept 3rd The order of business followed as such: 1. Representatives were reminded of their duties and attendance policy, i.e. two missed meetings and you’re OUT! (Why have a Leg. Board if students aren’t represented?) 2. Dr. Todd Fay was elected as the students’ representative to the Faculty Advisory Board replacing Dr. Villarino. 3. We discussed the need for another day students representative to Leg. Board other than the Day Student President. Propor tionally compared to boarding students, day students are under-represented. A formal petition will be drawn up and later presented to Leg. Board. 4. Scheduling Procedure - Remember to get all events approved by the Chief Marshall Cindy Arant. 5. The Student Center - How important is it to campus life? Should the investment be made to revitalize it? These were questions raised and hashed out. Most of the other discussion was relayed to the student body by Julia Owens at the Sept. 11 S.G.A. meeting. 6. The efficiency of Leg. Board - It is my opinion that Leg. Board should NOT be a YES Board but rather a viable, active, sounding body where students’ complaints, problems, and projects are explored. 7. A called Leg. Board meeting will be necessary to approve the Fall Fest schedule. That meeting will be Monday, Sept. 17 at 5:00 in the Back Door. How do we alleviate the parking problems? 2. The Faculty (once again) approved having a student representative at Faculty meetings. 3. Budget Problems - We have to tighten our belts; with less students enrolled, S.G.A. has less money. We will have to cut down on items charged to S.G.A. at the Book Store and itemize each purchase. 4. Freshman selection for Student-Faculty committees will be held after Fall Fest. This will be a gala affair with many distinguished guests and a time for total college participation. 2. Agenda for the S.(j.A. meeting Sept. 11th was reviewed (of course, you all were there so you know what that’s all about) 3. Honor Council - Ellen Newton reported on the outbreak of stealing in the large dorms. Unfortunately, the police shall have to be consulted. 4. Finances " Where is your money going? It is intended that S.G.A. will report later on where your tuition money goes, where parking money goes and where accumulated S.G.A. money goes. Treasurer Jennie Smith is in charge of this project. 5. An S.G.A. office - We NEED an office other than in the PIT below the Student Center which is inaccessible and depressing. Possibilities may include the offices to be soon unoccupied by Admissions or the Hanes house. 6. The S.G.A. President’s role on the Board of Trustees - How influential are other student government leaders and how much power do they have on their respective Board of Trustees? This is a goal Diana had outlined in her election speech and which Exec. Board shall undertake. A Meeting with Dr. Morrill: Sept. 11 Exec. Board was invited to an informal meeting with Dr. Morrill to discuss his goals and priorities for Salem and the goals and concerns of the students. We touched almost every aspect of the college from the budget to admissions, to atmosphere and student- faculty committees, to night classes and honor council. It wa^ refreshing to hear Dr. Morrill’s concern, encouragement, and enthusiasm toward students. Moreover, it was a sign of a new OPENNESS between students, faculty, and administration - a good sign indeed. It seem* paradoxical that while students are scrimping pennies the administration is squandering dollars. A case in point is the recent publication of the January term booklet. feel that this was an extravagant expenditure' We realize that correspondence outside the Salem community necessitates an at' k tractive booklet, but for those within th® college community such a polished product i*,, unnecessary. The January open house, th®)[] pamphlets that have circulated, and the list o* '|is ‘Si subjects published last spring should ^ sufficient. Redundancy is rampant both withiff?' the booklet and among the campus depart' ments. 'll We agree that the booklet is attractive, bnt the money spent could have been invested t something of enduring value! For exampl®' jji the college needs gym equipment, book*' Jt increased security, scholarships, and campa^ maintenance. This is indeed a letter of at' ij, monishment if not of condemnation. We hop^ t all concerned will see Salem as an integrate^ 'n community rather than a sundry collection isolated factions. Liza Ovingto’’ ^ Melissa WeddK \ Jennie Sroit'’ J' Donna Smit*" ' li of >1
