J Page 4, The Salemite, November 6,1981 Are Sr. Comps Necessary? By Cynthia Heath Salem Sports by Teri Capshaw Security^ continued from p. 2 Senior Comprehensive Exams, commonly known as Senior Comps, were formerly given in the spring of a student’s senior year as a requirement for graduation. Failure to pass the exam did not hinder a student’s qualification for graduation. According to one faculty member, this “constituted a weakness in the system.’’ Senior Comps ceased to be required in 1970, the same year the curriculum was restructured and the 4-1-4 program was instituted. Since then they have been offered at the option of each department. Students now have a choice of whether or not to take the exam. When asked to comment on Senior Comps several faculty members expressed that they would like to see them reinstated. Others consider them meaningless and not necessary for undergraduate colleges and universities. Student advocates of reinstituting the exams believe that a “synthesis of knowledge” is necessary for the completion of a college education. They also believe that whether it be through a senior seminar or a com prehensive exam, a student should be required to demonstrate proficiency in her field before graduation. Those opposing Senior Comps allege that they are a waste of time and, thus, serve no purpose at all. Ski season officially begins around Christmas, right? Wrong.
