Are Sr. Comps
Necessary?

Senior Comprehensive
Exams, commonly known as
Senior Comps, were formerly
given in the spring of a
student’s senior year as a
requirement for graduation.
Failure to pass the exam did
not hinder a student’s
qualification for graduation.
According to one faculty
member, this “constituted a
weakness in the system.’’
Senior Comps ceased to be
required in 1970, the same
year the curriculum was
restructured and the 4-1-4
program was instituted.
Since then they have been
offered at the option of each
department. Students now
have a choice of whether or
not to take the exam.
When asked to comment on
Senior Comps several faculty
members expressed that they
would like to see them
reinstated. Others consider
them meaningless and not
necessary for undergraduate
colleges and universities.
Student advocates of
reinstituting the exams
believe that a “synthesis of
knowledge” is necessary for
the completion of a college
education. They also believe
that whether it be through a
senior seminar or a com
prehensive exam, a student
should be required to
demonstrate proficiency in
her field before graduation.
Those opposing Senior Comps
allege that they are a waste of
time and, thus, serve no
purpose at all.
Ski season officially begins
around Christmas, right?
Wrong. In Snowshoe, West
Virginia, skiing begins as
early as November.
At Snowshoe, a com
bination of altitude (4,848
feet), climate, location and
weather bring freezing
temperatures and snowfall
before seasonal changes in
the lowlands.
Snowshoe is intoducing the
“Wild, Wonderful” ski season
which will run Nov. 21, or
sooner, thru Dec. 18. During
this season you can enjoy
early skiing with a 25 percent
savings on lifts, lodging,
lessons, and rentals.
Also new this year are four
more trails: Widowmaker, J-
Hook, Flume and
Hootenanny. These trails add
three new miles of skiing over
22 acres of diversified terrain
on the base of the mountain.
Snowshoe has also added
more condominiums, a
heated indoor swimming
pool, a health club, five new
places to eat, and additional
parking.
If you are wondering about
Snowshoe’s apres ski ac
tivities ... they offer en
tertainment seven nights a
week in the Resort Center,
ranging from bluegrass
concerts, square dances and
clogging performances to
movies and magic shows. In
the various clubs, pubs, and
restaurants, musical en
tertainment offers pop, jazz.
