All activities will take place on campus. April Arts week is dedicated to the arts on Salem campus. The objective of the week is to show students what is available on campus. The week will create an awareness of activities that may be unknown to some students. The week will begin Monday, April 10 with skits performed at lunch in the Refectory by Alpha Psi Omega. Later in the afternoon Pierettes will hold theater games in the May Dell for interested students. The week will continue on Tuesday with the performance of the Archways in the Refectory during lunch. The plans for Wednesday are not confirmed, but the idea is to get a student musician to perform during lunch. Also, on Wednesday Incunabula, will have an open house to explain what the literary club is all about. The magazine will be distributed at this time. Dansalems will continue the festivities on Thursday with a performance in the Refectory. The week will be rapped up on Friday with a band. The band will either be Jazz, Folk Music, or Classical. Parker Hubbard is in charge of April Arts week this year. She says that the week has changed considerably over the years. For example, the constitution for April Arts week states that a rising Sophomore or Junior should be in charge. Parker is a seruor. Parker has been planning the week by herself but will be assisted in implementing her plans by various volunteers from the different clubs performing. When asked what she thought about the week Parker replied, "Overall, I think it is a week that has a lot of potential." She also commented that April Arts week "needs to be rediscovered and redefined. Somebody needs to have it and really take off with it/' Parker thinks more involvement by leaders who are really interested and dedicated to the arts will improve the week. In past years, April Arts week ended with a large festival in the square. Last year, however, the festival ended with a performance in the Refectory. Parker hopes to get the finale back outside this year whether it is Clewell Patio or the Square. The week should be entertaining for all Salem students. Students are encouraged to participate, or better still, to get involved in making the next April Arts week even better. Cant, from pg. 9 college crowd is Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians. Brickell tries to take simple everyday ideas and give them a twist. This, as well as a put together approach to rock, reggae, folk, and jazz, has produced a very successful debut album. "What I Am", hit high on the pop and college charts. This single refers to religion as being a smile on a dog, and philosophy, a walk on a slippery rock. This definitely does take simple thoughts and give them a twist. The newest group on the scene with a female vocalist are The Cont from pg. 8 that almost automatically-but not always-draws scorn or disagreement.' Bush accepts rape or incest exceptions. . Quayle’s answer was morally sound but intellectually shallow. A human life created by rape or incest has the wme rights to continue its growth as a human life created by a loving couple. No one chooses the conditions of her or his conception. To empower anyone to decide, with life and death finality, that some lives began the wrong way and some the right way, is to sanction arbitrariness and deny the sacredness of all human life. That position is also savaged afe by Michele Brennan Salem has been paired with Mineral Springs Middle School in the Business-School Partnership Program that is joining many elementary and middle schools with various city businesses. In our case, Salem serves as the "business" in this agreement. The program began this January and will continue indefinitely. Through the efforts of Sarah Albritton and a committee of interested students and campus organiztions, a commitment of planning and executing activities with the Mineral Springs kids has developed. The week of April 3-7 several Salem students spent the early morning hours proctoring the California Achievement Tests (CATs) at Mineral Springs. The School of Music has also provided tickets to their "On The Town concert series for Mineral Springs Idds and their parents, as well as offering W give student recitals at Mineral Springs. The newly formed committee is also planning an event in early May that will allow approximately 100 Mineral Springs kids a chance to spend some . time at Salem. The committee will meet vrith a group of faculty and staff from Mineral Springs to organize a field day with games (soccer, softball etc.) and food. Omicron Delta Kappa and Mortar Board are jointly funding the concession stand which will sell hot dogs and drinks to the Salem community and provide free food for the Mineral Springs kids. Our partnership with Mineral Springs Middle School is a long-term project with the potential for many joint activities in the future. As Sarah Albritton says, "We are basically on our own to develop programs that suit the needs o both schools." Hopefully in the next couple of years individuals/ organizations, and even departments will become involved in serving as role models for the kids from Mineral Springs. Any interested students should contact Sarah Albritton in the Career Developmnet Office. Cowboy Junkies. Their debut album. The Trinity Session is carried by Margo Timmins. Her low-key vocals really make the band unique. '!The music we're doing now fits my personality," says Timmins. "It's low key, it's soft, it's an offering. A gentle offering. It's not a demand." All of this could be a part of simulating feminism into the 80's mainstream. A singer-songwriter can focus her attention on anything in the world and use her talent to get her message across. Look out guys, here they come! heartless and dogmatic. Wait till someone you love gets pregnant by a rapist, is a common and often screaming rejoinder. Okay, wait-and then act according to an informed conscience. But meanwhile, let's also do what the broadening prolife coalition is doing-working as hard as possible, whether as professionals, volunteers ^or one-on-one friends, to create the conditions in which all pregnancies are wanted and, if not, support the burdened lives with equal love and service. Without that an ideal, continued random violence is assured. Reprinted by permision of Writer's Syndicate, and The Washington Post. Cont. from pg. 1 and to institute a CE representative for those cases where a CE is involved, that way the accused is being judged by a jury of peers and it helps to bridge the gap. However, we didn't feel the CE representative needed to be on the council in cases involving traditional* age students, because that group, as a whole, is represented by the Off-Campus Association representative who sits on the council and votes on all the cases." On a much lighter side Mary describes a very funny incident for the council during a case. "One night we were meeting in the Rondthaler-Gramley House for a case, and we did not know a man was staying there. So we sent the accused upstairs to his bedroom. When he returned he was shocked to see a woman in his room. We then left him a note telling him that he would find no more women in his room unless he brought them!" In looking back, Mary says she has enjoyed serving on the council and says, "I am excited about Page Laughon serving next year, and I think she will do an excellent job." Ginger Saunders, the delegation who has the ability to make change happen, says, "I decided last summer that student government can take two routes - goals which were very high profile such as having dances in the refectory and changing the refectory hours or we could support everything within the student government." Ginger believes that more students know more information than ever before. She says, "giving people information gives them more incentive to know more and to paitiapate.'^ • • • • 'Things have been really weak up this year...we (Executive Board) folt was important to make sure that everybody was behind everythii*? else...we felt we had to strengthen the structure within Student Government or lots of things could not happen- Ginger says that as a whole the seniet class was determined to the very best job possible. This year Student Goveriunent ha* had a tremendous amount of supp®^ from Dean Farris, Dean Johnson, and President Litzenburg. "They at® fabulous...Dr. Farris always open's het home to any of us...President Litzenburg is one of our best supporters...he will go out on a limb fot Student Government." Ginger describes some of th® funniest moments during SGA meetings, "Julia's (Carpenter) performance with that wig and those shoes...Mary Bryan cussing and talkid? about sex on my microphone...Just*t* changing the alma mater..." Ging®^ says each day that she expect* something new to arise. "The day of tl*® car and the Board of Trustees interesting." ^ T think the thing 1 will miss the m^^ is the constant contact with people..-it°; so much the chummy friendships, bd^ the bonds...ril also miss the tejunwork that has been really exciting for me. Each of these prople have brought tremendous amoimt of knowledge ad determination to their job. They ha^ performed to the best of their abilitj and have contributed many posit*^ elements that the Salem commudit; will continue to employ in years t® come.
