Editorials page L Letters to the Editors Dear Editors, Has anyone noticed the hundreds of pots of geraniums? Or the well-trimmed side walks? Or the freshly cut green grass? Or the vibrant colored tulips and wandering ivy? If not—take notice! All of this can be accredited to the manj^ people who take pride in keeping this campus so beautiful. The time they spend tilling and planting, cutting and watering is noticeable throughout the entire campus. I would like to extend a huge "Thank you" to Mr. Tilley for his commitment to Salem. He is here working diligently every day (weekends too!) usually until 7 pm. In addition, he and his crew rescued the plants from the May Dell within fifteen minutes to make the FAC pretty for Founders’ Day Convocation. Plus, on Saturday afternoon - in the middle of Alumni weekend - he took time out to help some students disassemble and move broken bunk beds! And the list goes on!! To a dedicated man who always has a smile and a kind "hello" - we say thank you very much. Because of you Salem is a beautiful place to be! Mr. Tilley, you are our hero! P.S. If you see him tell him yourself! Dear Editors, I am writing to support the letter written to the editor in a back issue of The Salemite by "Appreciation at Salem." I would like to thank all those people who work hard to make our lives easier here at Salem. You may not appreciate them now but you will when you are about to graduate. Thank you Wayne, Kelvin, Judy, Linda, and the rest of the Refectory staff for preparing three meals a day for us for the last four years of our lives. Thank you Jim Wall, Bill Todd, Mr. Tilley, and everyone else in maintenance and grounds for making this campus beautiful, providing us with various things for our rooms and making stages and all those other various sorted things that appear on campus. Thank you Public Safety and Steve Wright for providing us with a safe and virtually crime free environment. I would also like to thank Housekeeping for doing all those wonderful duties that no one else wants to do. Finally, I think we all would like to thank the faculty and staff for providing us with an education we can be proud of! Sincerely, Mathilde Dumond Sincerely, Alison Gill and the Graduating Class of 1989 LM —r eU. 3 eJ_jL ^ A', ^ 1 Dear Editors, As I sit here in my tiny little room in Sisters dorm and follow a crack in the paint from the window to the ceiling, I am realizing how much I really love this place. I never would have never before enjoyed things such as Sheppards Pie, waking up at 6:50 for Founders Day, or having to go to a class instead of out to dinner with my friends, but I was faced with a terrible ordeal a few days ago that made me really appreciate this old place. I was told by my doctors that I would probably be better off at home with mom to take care of me rather than having to go and retrieve my own meals in the Refectory, and that the stress of dorm life was not good for my illness. Immediately I panicked. I didn’t want to leave with only three weeks left in my senior year. This time of the year is very stressful for everyone. The air seems to reek of tension and all eyes look w'eary. Most days you can hear a shrill voice in the refectory pledging her most priz^ possesions if she could just go home. Now really think about going home today with only a few short weeks left. When the idea becomes real you begin to realize all of the things that make Salem the special place that it is. If you were in your room at home filled with high school momentos instead of your all too small dorm room here at Salem you would miss hearing your neighbor play her music at odd hours, you would feel stange not hearing "hot water" every time you took a shower, you would miss not chatting with your friends over a meal of fish nuggets and wilted lettuce, but most of all you would miss the feeling that you get by being in a place that is so special and unique. There are not many places in these United States that you can make good friends like you can at Salem. There are not many colleges where students can feel just as comfortable eating lunch with their art professor as they do their best friend. Girls, this is indeed a very special place, and you should not wish your time here away because it will pass all too quickly. Sincerely, Lea Daughtridge / Dear Editors, This is an open letter to the Salem Community. As of late, the abortion issue has heated up in the news. With many speculating that the Supreme Court could overturn Roe vs. Wade when it rules on the Webster vs. Reproductive Health Services case, our constitutional right as women to obtain a safe and legal abortion is in jeopardy. I commend Julia Carpenter for her well written article concerning this issue which appeared in the last Salemite. But I wanted to reiterate several points concerning your right to an abortion. Please do not take this issue lightly. Let me pose a question. What if you were to become pregnant or your roomate were to find herself pregnant? Would you not want several options available to you when approaching the problem? Abortion may not be for you or for me, but the option of a safe and legal abortion should not be taken away from any woman. As a member of the Salem College community Steve Neal is our U.S. Congressman. Please do not hesitate to express your feelings about this issue in a letter to him. His address is 2463 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, D.C. 20515. Your state representatives can be contacted at the North Carolina General Assembly , Raleigh, N.C 27611. As women about to enter the world outside of Salem, we should always i concern ourselves with issues that not only effect this campus, but issues that eff^ women in general. Dear Editors, I would like to congratulate you on your work this year. The Salemite has vastly improved over the last two years. The articles are interesting and informative and current. Keep up the good work! Thanks for all your time (and overtime) and effort! Sncerely, Barbara Burby Sincerely, Bridget Maley I, Susie Salem, want to wish the Class of 1989 the best of luck. Certain ones of you have provided me with a smile when 1 thought no one cared. Certain ones of you have provided shoulders for me to cry on. Certain ones of you have serenaded me and my friends at early hours in the morning. We’ve road tripped to Davidson, Carolina, and on occasion Hampden-Sydney. You "initiated" us the night before Fall Fest as well as surprised us on that infamous day of Sophomore Surprise. I must admit, at times I thought I hated some of you, but of course I would see those big smiles and I knew I couldn’t hate any of you. So, Class of ’89, as a group you are incredible! Individually, you are friendly, helpful, intelligent, creative (not messy), and a bunch of the best friends anyone could ever ask for. To the soon to be Salem grads, YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!
