With the returning players this year's team has enormous potential. Seniors Heather Lewisohn and Galen Miller are expected to lead the team with Lewisohn's ever powering spike and Miller's equally powerful serve. Sophomores Amy Kerlin, Nancy Lloyd and Mary Bradley Thompson provide the extra power necessary at the net. Juniors Michelle Swank and Susan Yu provide the defensive coverage with sophomores Judith Benton and Debbie MacMahon. But, the team still needs more players. If you have ever played volleyball, please come join us. The first official practice is Wednesday, August 30, at 3:00 pm. If you have any questions, please contact Coach McEwen. Soccer PremiertSpring ’90 by Jenny Savage The Salem College soccer team has had many, many cfianges over the past few years. We have had different coaches, people graduating and more new coaches. In the past Salem has had both a Fall and Spring soccer team, but this year, it is somewhat different. The soccer team for the 1989-90 is playing in the Spring and not the fall. There are many reasons for this. One being the new coach, Cathy Mahaffey, is coaching Field Hockey in the fall and we therefore do not have a coach for a Fall soccer team. Also, many athletes play fall sports and cannot play soccer in the fall, but just in the Spring. In the fall season of 1988, there were many injuries in the fall and many players could not play in the Spring. But have no fear, there will be a Spring soccer team. As aforementioned, the Salem soccer team has gone through many changes and we are looking toward to a good season on the fall. So, if you are interested, talk to Coach Mahaffey come Springtime. We always have a lot of fun, which is why we are all out there. Best of luck to all the fall athletics! Hockey Team Improves by Katy Glen At 9:30 last Wednesday morning the 1989 Salem College hockey team gathered for its first day of practice. Although the team lost two seniors from last year, it gained seven new players this season. In addition, Ms. Cathy "We Don't Walk" Mahaffey joined to coach the five-year-old hockey program. Ms. Mahaffey played hockey for Appalachian State University and continued playing on national teams while living in Colorado. Therefore, she brings much experience and enthusiasm to the team. After only a week of practice the team has already improved greatly, and the players anticipate a very successful year. Ready To Run The Cross Country Team opens its first season this fall. All interested students are urged to participate. It is a great way to get in shape and get class credit at the same time. Look for an organizational meeting early in the Fall or contact Ms. Richards.
