Editorials page 3 Letters to the Editors informed community of all of us who believe that a public forum for the discussion of shared concerns is one vital measure of our health as a College. You have been committed to that public discussion, and I, for one, have felt a _ closer identification with Salem students. Thank you for your hard work, your vision, and your legacy to next year's staff. Emily Wilson Dear Editors, I want to congradulate and to thank the editors and staff for the publications this year for the Salem community. The Salemite is the best I can remember in my five years here, and I applaud the vigor of your editorials, the diversity of your features, the liveliness of your columns, and the general probing nature of the journalism. You have helped to create and enliven a more Dear Editors, On Monday night I watched Nightline with Diane Sawyer. Her topic was college cheating. I want to briefly sum up what the program reported. Atl^iami University a survey showed that 9 out of 10 students cheated in some way. Many students state that they have cheated many times, one anonymoL student says that at least 90% of students are active Heaters. PeS^rdine Univers^ of Los Angeles, California has asked university offidals to ban Research Assistance, a company that writes term papers and other research materials for students to purchase, from coming onto their campus to advertise for their papers. The attorney general of Los Ang^s will be pressing charges against Research Assistance later this week. The Attorney Genefal has^determined that companies like Research Assistance are in violation of the California Education Law. caiom rpmainq tn be My point of this editorial is very simple. As always, Salem remains to^ an hoiS^-bound school, one which we can all say wth pnde we attend. We a^e^ l^cky that we, as students, come to Salem with a very good educational background and that we do not feel the need to cheat in order to be successful in mr college career. But in a much broader aspect, we do not have the desire to cheat in order to be successful in life. I tm tha^ul Salem College does not follow the national norm where cheating is concerned! Sincerely, April L. Edmondson phenomenal and commendable. This is not to say that Sally, Diane, Mary-Alston, Siri, and Michelle do not deserve recognition for their hard work and dedication, because believe me they do. I want to say thank-you with a big hug. The entire Executive Board needs to be thanked, appreciated, and congratulated for what they have accomplished and they should all feel good about a job well done. Taking over Strat's job won’t be easy, but I guarantee that I will give it my best. I have realized what Strat has done this year and my respect for her is at an all-time high. Dear Editors, Since I have become S.G.A. President, I have really taken notice to something or should I say someone. That person is Strat Newitt. As I see it, Strat was a fantastic president. I have known Strat since I was a Freshman. Ever since then I have seen a mature and responsible young woman emerge. During this past year I have swn these characteristics and qualities flourish within her. I feel that she has done something that no other S.G.A. president has accomplished before, that is to be accessible and used. I do not mean in the sense of abuse, I mean that the S.G.A. has been approachable this year. The past S.G.A. made our government usable and workable. "The dedication she has put into her job cannot be expressed in words. The past year has seen many changes and has given us much hope and to see Strat rise above the disappointments and dovynfall? ,i? Strat, Thank you for you support and understanding. Congratulations on a fantastic year and I only hope next year will be as great. And yes, I ant a Strat wanna-be. I love you. Sincerely, Betsy^xnian Dear Editors, The 1989-90 issues of The Salemite have been among the very best I have read during my time at the College. Indeed, great progress has been made this year with respect to the format, design, and content of The Salemite . We have every reason to be pleased by what Amy, April, and their colleagues have accomplished on our behalf. I am inclined to believe that we all owe them an expression of our appreciation for a job well done. Sncerdy, Thomas V. Litzenburg Jr. President >1 H'-i’- Dear Editors, I think the Salem community should thank Cathy Mahaffey for the progress she has made in the field hockey and soccer programs. Other clubs and colleges have had endless compliments about the improvement in both teams. The Salem players adopted a serious and dedicated attitude that often was not present before Cathy came, and the administration felt the push for growth and improvement in the athletic department. As the denumd for progress increases, we need to see some significant accomplishments. The teams need athletes, the athletes need a coach and a trainer, and the department needs more cooperation from administration. Athletes have joined the teams. Coaches will be interviewed. What about the trainer? I don't know. It seems no action is taking place. What about administrative cooperation? I won't even open the can of worms. At least not in this letter. the following is the purpose of my letter. As the athletes know and many other students are learning, Cathy Mahaffey is not returning next year. After seeing the hockey and soccer teams improve through a difficult year, Salem will lose one of its finest coaches. Upon arriving last August, Cathy met a group of girls with which she was to create a hockey team. She was not dealt with an easy hand of cards. Some players had lots of experience and others had none. Nevertheless, Cathy tackled her job with the same care and pride Dear Editors, We would like to acknowledge the participants that have taken part in planting the trees around the Salem Campus. The planting of trees needs to be a continuous effort throughout the world. Salem's beauty is evident in the amount of planting that has been done, and we think it looks great! Trees have many uses, the most important is keeping the nature's cycle continuous. Keep up the good effort; the campus loote great! Sincerely, Jane T. Fisher & Emily O'Brien that she instilled in each of her players. The same stoiy applies to her soccer team. Again, Cathy coached talented soccer players and hesitant beginners. And again, each player developed the same care and pride. Although I am using my own personal feelings and experiences to draw these conclusions, I think most of CatHy’s players agree with the following whether they know it or not. There -was frustration and impatience during practices. There was confusion and tension during games. But, we all turned to Cathy for leadership. She pulled something special out of us. Tears, anger, and smiles passed from player to player and between player and coach. When we were lazy, she told us to get the lead out. When there was a problem, she put her finger on it. We battled her with excuses but we knew she was right. When we lost games after playing well, Cathy picked our heads up. When we lost our pride, she pumped it into us. When we lost desire she inspired us. Thank you Cathy. Thank you for giving me pride. Thank you for giving me desire. Thank you for pushing me farther than I've ever been. Thank you for being my coach. And thank you for being my friend. I will miss you - all your girls will miss you. Sincerely, Katy Glenn
