by Dawn M. Darby He's cute, he's talented and boy can he sing! He's the 19 year old sopho more at Duke University who managed to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated his freshman year, a feat which he modestly omits from his lists of accomplishments. Team accomplish ments and those of his father are the things he mentions as the ones he is most proud of. He's Grant Hill, forward/point guard for the #1,2 years in a row Duke basketball team. In about a three hour session of chillin' with Grant and the fellas, it is easy to see how his smooth ness and coyness on the court are only mere reflections of the man behind the legend (ears ,shyness, smile!) Naturally, considering myself to be a quasi-Joumalist, I attempted per sistently to exert my professionalism .NOT! Because when the sharp, witty, outgoing, handsome and exceptional on the court, roommate sophomore Antonio Lang answered the door sing ing, Cypress Hill, a rap artist, (WITH OUT HIS SHIRT ON!!!), my professional intentions wrestled greatly with my heart which wanted to let out a huge Alabama yell!!(only to aid my blood back into circulation!) However, the evening did begin with many, serious, thought induced questions posed to stimulate the intel lectual mind. Grant and Antonio were sincere, patient, and objective while successfully analyzing why their ath letic program is perceivably superior to that of our city's Wake Forest Univer sity's. Grant, who is easygoing, genu ine, yielding and was also under the weather, peacefully gulped his gator- ade and discussed how, contrary to the general consensus of his family, friends and fans, he doesn't consider himself a role model. "I have role models myself and I still look up to people (like my father), and it's hard to believe that I'm actually looked up upon. It's something that amazes me." Grant said. He attributes this modesty to being around successful athletes all of his life. With a father like Mr. Calvin Hill, A Yale graduate, former player with the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Re dskins , the Cleveland Browns and for mer Doonesbury character who is cur rently the vice-president for the Balti more Orioles (who won their first game of the season opened by a mediocre pitch by United States President, George Bush), it is easy to see how quickly disenchantment with fame could be embedded into reality. "I've been around athletes all of my life f therefore] there has been a cer tain code of conduct [in which you have to follow] Tm conscious of the fact that when Tm in a public place I have to act a certain way, when I go to the mall, I know I have to have a certain attitude, I mean, I can't go looking mad or pissed off, I have to act a certain way and if I don't then I would be acting nasty, and I know that people would think differ ently of me."Grant says that this is [in large] because of his parents exposing immediately the center of attention by scouts from all of the best college ath letic programs. Even though he was well known then he admits that he was quite shy in high school and only had his small group of friends but he is slowly coming out of his quietness al though very low-key .His attitude has proven to be a commodity and one of the finer parts of the personalities of •For State OfTtwArtln Tanning" EAST COAST T^S (Behind Triad Bank On North Point Blvd.) 759-7312 • SUN-26 LAMP WOLFF SYSTEM • BOSE SOUND SYSTEM • 1 MONTH UNLIMITED VISITS $45 4410 Providence Lene, Suite I Mon.-Fri. 7am-10pm Sat 8am-6pm Sun. 1pm-6pnt % Grant, Majcolm, Skip and Antonio... I am referring to the Soccer game against Wake Forest on April 8,1992. But this could be the story of any sports event at Salem. For sports to be such a big part of a large number of Salem students' lives why is fan support so low? This article is not meant to point the finger. I know it is difficult to find the time to go to games. Even as sports editor, attending games is not as impor tant as it should be to me. But after talking wiht soccer team members Nancy Georgitis and Candy Bass, 1 understand how important it is to play ers to have fan support. "I like for people to come out and cheer for me," said Candy. She also said that it helps her performance when she knows that named coaches of the year by the same organization. -Mike Tyson was convicted of raping and assaulting Desiree Washington a former contestant of the Miss Black America Contest. Tyson is app>ealing the decision. -Lake Superior State defeated Wiscon sin on April 4,1992 to win the NCAA hockey title. Salem Spirit? her fellow Salem Sisters are in the stands cheering for her. Nancy said that fan supp>ort this season "started outgood then wentbad." She attributes this to the sporadic soccer schedule, but also the lack of student interest. The plea to support our college teams comes a little late in the year with most seasons ending soon. However, take it as a pep talk for next year. And there is much to look forward to. The soccer team has nine freshman and most of them have had soccer experience. If you missed out on this year's soccer team, you missed the chance to see captains Nancy Georgitis, Jean Williams, and Laura Franklin play aggressive and im pressive soccer. Unfortunately, this is Jean and Laura's final season.
