FkojECT Story As Tao By Jerome Vick One day last spring the Agriculture teach er talked to all the boys who would be en tering high school in the fall, and who v/ere planning to take Voca tional Agriculture. He told us that the F.P.A. Chapter had eight pure bred Spotted Poland China gilts that wovild be given to boys for projects on certain conditions. He ex plained that these gilts were to be fed and cared for accord ing to approved prac tices, and that, if v;e took one, we were to agree to do this and to later give the chapter tv/o gilts from our first litter. That afternoon I saw I.!r. Kowton, the teach er, and asked for a gilt. I was fortunate in securing one of the pure-breds for my pro ject. Mr. Howton in formed me I would got it in June or July. I immediately began to make plans for it. I made an agreement with my father whereby I was to have an acre of corn for a project and this would furnish ?o:ae feed for my 'pig project. My father c.lso helped me prepare the place for my gilt. Vi/e. got posts from our ovm woods lot and bought a roll of fence. The entire cost of the preparation was !;i;l2,GO. On Saturday, July 12, Mr. Howton brought the pig to me, rjid we put her in the pen I had previously made. At first she was wild and would not eat, but by morning she was ac customed to her no\! homo and was eating heartily, I fed her milk, and corn. There were Soybeans in the pasture that she had access to. There is a well near my lot; therefore, it is ea: y to keep plenty of v;at- er for her, Later I fed her a mixture of wheat, corn, cotton seed meal, fish meal, and minerals. She has gained rapidly; when I got her, she v/eighed only 75 poionds and nov; she v/oighs abou£ 250 poimds. r have had her bred and she v/ill farrow March 16.
