March 12. 1945 BAILEY BUGLE Page 6 Synopses Of Shakespeare's Plays Written By Seniors Julius Caesar Brutus, believed by Julius Caesar to be his best friend, is cleverly led by Cas sius to organize a group of conspirators against Caesar. The conspirators, all ex cept Brutus,are pronpt- ed by motives of jeal ousy and hate to mur der Caesar. Brutus convinces his country men that he did so for their ov/n good, that should Caesar have liv ed he would have taken too much advantage of his power. Brutus, later realiz ing that his side is meeting defeat, per suades one of his men to assist him in com mitting suicide, Horace High KING LEAR Out, out,brief candle I Life's but a v/alking shadow, a poor player That striats and frets his hour upon the stage And then is heard no more, Shakespeare King Lear,deciding to divide his kingdom a- mong his three daugh ters and deceived by the flattery of the two elder ones, disin herits the youngest,but the most sineere. The youngest goes to F!rance, falls in love, and marries the king. Re turning, she finds her father crazy and re jected by her sisters. who have also blinded her friend, the Duke of G-loucostor. The Duke's disloyal son imprisons Lear and his youngest daughter, who is later hanged. One of the elder sisters poisons the other and then commits suicide. Gloucester's faithful son, Edgar, becomes king, as Lear dies of grief. C. V;., Jr. RED MAPLES Red maples in bloom Dispel v/inter's gloom. Arlando, also banished and in love v;ith Rosalind, goes to Arden forest too. There he meets a young shepherd and tells of his pangs of love. In the end the disguise is thrown off and the ].overs are re united. A lover is found for Celia and a double wedding is per formed, Hildred Ruffin The Merchant Of Venice Generous Antonio,bor rowing money from evil Shylock to finance Bassanio's v/ooing of Portia, pledges as se curity a pound of flesh if he cannot pay when his ships come in. After successfully v/ooing and winning Portia by a test of caskets and the mar riage of his friend, Grataino, to her maid, Bassanio learns that Antonio's ships are lost. In the trial presided over by dis guised Portia as judge and her maid ’as clerk, Shylock is made to for feit his fortune for attempting the life of Antonio. Antonio gives his part to Lorenzo, his friend, who mar ried Shylock's daugh ter, on the condition that Shylock v/ould re form, Carl Walker, Jr,
