Lee Strickland, Hearts Still Respond "KtVdlentin^Spiri t Today all over tha world people are celebrating VAL ENTINES aiY as the "festi val of hearts." There are many myths re lating to the beginning of Valentine ■'^ay, but the folloviring is perhaps the most beautiful: Sairt Valentine, a bishop and martyr of the church, v/as seized and put intc prison by the Romans be cause of his Christian be lief. As the story goes, he would save crumbs from his me%ls and sprinkle them on the window sill of his cell for the birds. In return for the crumbs, the birds would bring .fiolot leaves on which St. Valen tine would write messages of hope and cheer. The birds delivered "these messages to the sick and to other friends of St, Valentine, TOKENS On February 14, 270, St. Valentine was put to death. Since then, people send tokens.of love and friend ship to their friends in shape of hearts, represent ing voilet leaves. These are often comical as well as sontimenta1. Today Valentine Day is only a day of "social pleasentry" when v;e send Valentines to our friends, but long ago it was taken more seriously. Then it v/as believed that the first person of the oppo site sex one saw on VaDen-- tine Day was to be hit Valentine for the year M not for lifer however to day it is just a . conforn- i'tyto custom.
