FOUR PLA.YERS DISABLED Because of injuries Janice Bunn, Clara Jean Stone, Isaac Medlin, and Bobby Perry, members of last year’s squad, are un able to participate in basketball activities for the present. JACKET ORDERS WITHHELD Orders for boy's Virarm—-up jackets have been can celled because the coats cannot be secured in the school colors. Basketball season is here againJ From the. gym can be heard the steady thud of the ball as it is bounced on the floor, the pattering of running feet, and the exultant cheers of the spectators as one makes a goal. Excited vfhispers are heard in the hall, each one expressing someone’s opinion as to who will get a basketball suit. Yes, basketball is here again in all its splendor, but who among the merry throng ever gave thought as to how basketball ori ginated? In 1891 Dr. James Nais- mith, instructor at YI®JA College, Springfield, Mass., was asked to devise an original game that could be played indoors without injury to the players. After planning the game and writing 13 rules, 12 of which are used today. Dr. Kaismith v/ent to the custodian and asked him for tv/o boxes to put up at each end of the gym. The custodian, not having the boxes, gave Dr. Nai- saith two peach baskets. From these baskets the game received the name "basketball".
