November ZZ, 1946 BAILEY BUGLE BAILEY.NORTH CAI^QLINA Pag;e 12 Pnnc i pe I's Column Thanksgiving Should Be Day Of Thanks As has been previously announced, v/e are getting two days off for Thanks giving again this year. Time to consider the ori gin and meaning of this holiday can be profitably taken by all of us. The story of the hardships en dured by the early set tlers of /unerica is conmon knowledge. V/hen these peo ple realized that they had been blessed v/ith a bounti ful harvest, they were thankful to- 'their God for the abundance. They viere not satisfied with ordina ry thanksgiving, but set aside several days to be observed as a special time of giving thanks. The sto ry is familiar how they feasted and gave thanks to God for His goodness to ward them in the nev; v/orld. EhRLY AliERICANS These '.early American set tlers were sincere in their giving of thanks. Al though they feasted and made merry, feasting and merrymaking were not the important things to them on this Thanksgiving occa sion. Feasting and merry making have come down to us as an important part of the Thanksgiving spirit to day. What v/e need to guard against is the pos sibility that the merrymak ing and feasting may be come more important in the observance than the rever ent thankfulness which we are attempting to show. In recent years Thanksgiving Day has become a day of big hunting and fishing tv-ips, of football games drav/ing tremendous crowds, and of visits to relatives and friends who haven't been seen for many years. Can Thanksgiving Day be properly observed in con nection with these prac tices? Obviously, yes, but it is more difficult than a quiet, reverent day with one’s immediate family and friends. SPENDING OF THAIhKSGIVING Hov/ should our Thanksgiv ing Day be spent? Someone has said that there is no better way than to use it singing, praying, and giv ing. ’«'ie can shov; our grati tude through song and pray er. V/hat are things that you have this year for which to be thankful? llake a mental list of them, or better still, list them on a sheet of paper. The num ber will amaze you, I am sure, and will include, a- long v/ith many others, some of the following: peace, freedom, love, friendship, the Church, home, school, health,Demo cracy, food, clothing, and shelter. Finally, v;e have an opportunity to give. Vie can give of our time, of our talents, and of our means. Each of us should find someone on Thanksgiv ing Day less fortunate than we and share our bles sings v/ith him. In so do ing each would get a last ing good from the day. Thanksgiving is as Ameri can as the land, the sea, and the sky. Let us keep this day set aside for giv ing thanks to- God for His foodness to us as indivi- uals and as a nation. BAILEY LIONS CLUB Lions, if you are absent from a meeting you cut our attendance percentage. V/elcome, Lion Burgess, we are glad you like our civic club. V>e have been plotting against the rats of this community. Look out i We are on your trail, k'hen the day arrives we ask the complete coopera tion of all citizens in artd‘around Bailey that the damage done by rats may be eliminated. Do we need more indus tries in Bailey? Can we have them? Now? Just a suggestion: Do we want some industry to the exterft that the people are willing to develop it at home or do v;e want rone outside interest to oone here and reap the returns?
