Asked v/hy this collective inter est, he replied, "One thing makes you v/ant to get many more." Wken his older brothers and sisters v;cnt av/ay from home to some interesting place, .they v;ould send Bobby a little gift. Re ceiving many of these sou venirs, ho decided that £l*d- ding to these would be an interesting hobby to pro mote . A cup was sent to him by his oldest brother from a shrine on Okayama. People went to this shrine to pay tribute to the cherry blos soms. The cups were used as a decoration for the shrine. Another hand-paint- ed cup cane from an an cient tomb on Okliyama, Once a week these cups fil led v/ith rice v^cre carried to this tomb to feed the spirits so they v/ould not die. From liitsuhoma came hara- kiri knives, a pair of v;ooden shoes, and an opium pipe; and from Osaka, a whip used to drive the Korean slave laborers. Bobby received six arti cles from Japan: a Japa nese medal won by a Japa nese soldier who because he opposed the action of his government gave the av/ard av/ay, a dog tag, a piece of a Zero plane, a pair of goggles, an ash tray made of empty gun- shells, and some ornaments held by a lady in a mar riage ceremony* Money was sent to Bobby from New Zealand, Panama, Australia, Cuba, Hawaii, the Philippines, and Japan. Nine items made of wood were sent to him from var ious places in the United- State s. They include a boat from Annapolis, liary- jland; a fish from Seattle, T/ashington; a key from Chicago, Illinois; scis sors from lYiHiamsburg, Virginia; a barrel from V/aycross, Georgia; a well from Bremirton,Vi/ashington; the helm of a ship from Coney Island,New York; and gfjfeather v/ith a pen from Smoky Mountains, North Caro lina. fllag-like banners from 18 states decorate his room. Bobby’s nost prized pos session is a v/alking stick that can be taken apart| revealing within a knife. He''has this exhibit on display at his home.J.B.G.
