July 12, 1947 Dear ' Diary, At last the day which I have long anticipated has arrived, .and I am on my way to Clarksdale,. Mississippi, where I will visit my cousin for a while. We are in Eeflin, Alabama, for the night, and so far the scen ery has been beautiful. The tv/o most important cities we went through to day were Columbia, South Carolina, and Atlanta, Geo rgia. We stopped to get a good look at Stone Moun tain, which has General Lae and part of his Army carved on it. The mountain is located abcut 18 miles from Atlanta. It really was an interesting sight to see. General Lee’s nose is five feet tall. A lunch eon was given several years ago in his shoulder, and twenty-seven people were seated around the table with several people left standing. The carvings haven’t been finished, because the man who start ed them died before he finished his job; but they hope to start working on the project again sometime soon. July 13, 1947 Vile have arrived at our destination, hot and tired. Clarksdale, a small twon about the size of Wilson, North Carolina, is in the middle of the Mississippi delta, where the climate is hot and sticky. The Mississippi River is only thirty miles away, July 18, 1947 Today we started on our long journey homeward. To night we are in Athens, Georgia, and I have crossed mountains until my ear drums roar and feel very much enlarged. July 19, 1947 Home at last I After all the good times I've had during the past week^ it seems good to be home, knowing I v/on't have to get up at four o'clock in the morning and travel se veral hundred miles ts" fere stopping.
