The first Christmas tree is traced back to Romo, I'Jhen the pagans of North ern Europe became Christ ians, they made their ever greens, a sacred symbol to them, a part of the Christ mas festival.The gilt nuts and apples with which they decorated the trees v;ere imitations of the stars. An old legend tells that twelve centuries ago an Englishman, Winfrod, went to Germany to convert the Germrn people to the Christian belief. Upon ar riving there, he found a 2;roup of Thor worshipers gathered around a great oak in the process of sac rificing a yotang prince to their god, Thor. Uinfred saved the child, took the axe, and cut the big oak down. As it fell, ^ young fir tree camo into view, Winfrod, believing the tree to bo a sign of Christ, acclaimed it as the tree of life.
