Some parents are mis-in-
ternreting the attendance
cards being sent out from
the office. These cards
are sent to notify parents
that their children were
absent for the days indi
cated but do not say nor
mean to imo3y that the stu
dents skipped school.
Unfortunately, we have
some students who do skip.
The cards ask that the
school be notified if the
parents do not know about
the days missed by their
children.
The Legislature is in ses
sion and the School Budget
for the next two years is
UP for consideration. The
Advisory Budget Commission
recommendations do not pro
vide enough money to c-rry

out severe retrenchments
along several lines. The
following examples give
you an idea of what the
schools face.
First, there will be a
ten per cent reduction in
teacher salaries or at
best a salary scale equal
to the one now in use. A
reduction will drive many
able teachers out of the
profession and into other
jobs.
A second result will be
an increase in the teacher
load, already the highest
in the nation.
Unless there are two mild
winters, the appropriation
for fuel is not sufficient
to heat the buildings.
Either the term will have
to be shortened or schools
will be forced to operate
during warm weather.
The proposed money for
busses is enough to oper
ate the busses only 129 of
the 180 days in a school
year. Also the allotment
of money for bus drivers
is such that 297 busses
will not have drivers for
the entire year.
If you are interested in
your schools doing nothing
more than holding their

Senator and Representative
and urge them to vote for
a liberal increase in the
school f\inds.
